Category Description for Short Lessons in U.S. History:

Very similar to its world history counterpart in format (please see Short Lessons in World History description), with short, bite-sized lessons that together provide a good overview of U.S. history. After the initial chapter on maps, the book progresses from 1003 through 2000 (and beyond). The text is interesting, with "Think About It" boxes scattered throughout, asking incisive questions of the reader. This, along with the focus biographies, maps and map-reading, and varied exercises makes it a good choice for a framework to build your study of U.S. History on. I think it would be a "natural" to use as a text along with a literature-based study.

I was looking for a curriculum for homeschooling that was brief and "to the point" that teaches the basic facts.

I ordered this for my dyslexic high school student. He is much more likely to be engaged and remember what he learned while watching & listening to the content. We will also follow up with an essay and workbook that he can scribe to me, if needed.

Short Lessons in U.S. History great investment!
After receiving Short Lessons in U.S. History, I was pleasantly surprised with the content of the book. It is brief, but detailed to the essential teaching and learning skills needed. Although I will be using it for my 5th grader, I am going to keep it on hand for all future lessons in U.S. History. The glossary content is awesome and gives great descriptions to key words and definitions.

This is a great source of history worksheets including map activities crosswords matching etc I use Hakim's History of US books as my primary text and workbook pages from this book plus volumes 1 and 2 of Key Decisions in US History (same publisher) as supplements I found the study guide books for the Hakim books really bogged us down but I still needed some supplementary activities to make sure we covered the most important points in sufficient detailI've barely skimmed the text portion so I can't comment about the reviewer who found it biased but the exercises that we've done are really about organizing key facts people and places Nothing biased there About all I can say about the text is that it's horribly shortened/condensed it's MUCH shorter than any standard history textbook If any particular issue or person is important to you you'll surely have to supplement

This text reads like a handbook for Liberals For example in a section on violence the "Critical Thinking" box asks the question "Why do people who call themselves pro-life think it is ever right to kill someone?" It's bad enough thatRonald Reagan barely gets a mention while Bill Clinton and Jesse Jackson and the like are fully covered Students deserve an unbiased text

This worktext covers the facts of history in short "just the facts ma'am" snipets Why would this be worthwhile? It works well for the family that uses a literature approach to history Your child can study the quick facts and then spend lots of time reading great biographies historical fiction great projects etc I know one family who used this text with their special needs high schooler and it worked perfectly for them There are enough chapter ending questions and map activities to accomplish a "bare bones" type of course
