Product Description:

A total language arts program that teaches students to spell, write, and read (in that order). This approach was developed by Romalda Spalding alongside the work done by Orton & Gillingham. The research-based instruction begins by teaching 70 phonograms (letter/minimal sound units). Once these are learned, spelling instruction begins based on a list of words compiled by frequency of use. Children learn 29 spelling rules by example, with the teacher following an exact script. After learning the 70 phonograms and 29 spelling rules, the student has the tools to spell 80% of English words. Children keep a personal spelling book where they will ultimately accumulate a personal list of hundreds of words. The last major tool is a simple word marking system utilizing five conventions (ex. rich, ze ro). In the sixty-plus years this program has been in use, instructors have discovered that students begin reading ("on their own) after learning the first 30 or so phonograms. The revised 6th edition adds additional resources and research notes. The manual includes two parts: Part 1 includes detailed lessons and procedures, while Part 2 includes recommendations for quality children's literature and word lists.

Category Description for Other Programs:

WE USED THIS PROCESS WHEN WE HOMESCHOOLED OUR CHILDREN. OUR YOUNGEST WAS NOT READING ON HIS OWN LIKE THE OTHER CHILDREN. AFTER USING THIS PROCESS HE QUICKLY BEGAN READING AND WAS WRITING CHAPTER BOOKS BY THE TIME HE WAS 9. IT ALSO HELPED HIM TO BECOME A GREAT SPELLER.

I bought The Writing Road to Reading years ago to teach my children how to read. All four of them are very good readers, now. Since my old copy could not be found, yet, I am ordering the newer edition so that I can teach my grand daughter how to read.

Came highly recommended by another home school mom. It has been great for my second grader who never quite grasped phonics before trying this.

I need a new writing, reading, spelling curriculum for my son, who I am homeschooling, that has autism
Michelle J on Oct 16, 2015
I loaned my book to my son for his new additions to his family. The kids didn't know how to read and he felt this book would be as instrumental for them as it was for him when I successfully homeschooled him and taught him how to read, write legibly, and understand what he read. My son, read at a 1st grade level when I started and three months later he was reading at grade level. Three years later, he tested at college level! Did I mention the kids are reading? Well, they are!

Is this a digital download or a paper book? If so is it just a scan of the print book or a real ebook with resizable and searchable text?
A shopper on May 9, 2023
BEST ANSWER: I purchased this last year and it is a full size, physical copy/paperback book (more of a textbook size actually). Hope that helps!
Does this come with the Phonogram Cards required for the program?
User on Jul 12, 2018
BEST ANSWER: No, it does not include any cards. Although not from this publisher/program, these cards are from a similar program and might work for you.

What are the sounds of the letter y?
A shopper on Feb 21, 2017
BEST ANSWER: I teach the y sound as in yet, short i sound as in gym, long i sound as in my, and the long e sound as in baby. The long e sound is not on Spalding's card, but it is used in American English, so it should be included.

Great System- I learned to read and spell this way
When I was in first grade I met Ms. Spaulding. She was in her 80's and in a wheelchair, but she came to see our classroom and our progress with her system. Thanks to her, I developed a lifelong passion and love for reading. Now that I have children of my own, I want to give them the same gift of the ability to sound out any word with confidence.

This is the most comprehensive and best language arts program on the market Phonics spelling and grammar all in one book for all of elementary school! I taught three children to read with this book It can be a bit overwhelming at first and it is helpful to contact someone who has used the program for questions The book is laid out for a school setting but is easily adapted to a home school You do not need to spend as many hours a day as she recommends since you have fewer students I have found nothing to compare this program with she makes the English language easy to understand and learn!

The Writing Road to Reading (WRTR) is an amazing method It is based on the research done by Dr Samuel Orton beginning in the 1920's His research delved into the how and why of learning to read and the difficulties some children experience His results were nothing short of astonishing He discovered how all children can learn successfully His method used all the modalities: visual auditory kinestic and tactile Romalda Spalding a teacher worked with him for approximately two years She developed the Spalding Method based on his research and his direction The Spalding Method is laid out in full in the WRTR This program is a K-8 complete curriculum The cost is amazingly low while the benefits are amazingly great I am teaching three of my children this method; two have started this method at the beginning of their school career the other began at age 10 Although the 10 year old did not have difficulties with language the method greatly benefited her logical reasoning when reading and spelling It also greatly improved her cursive handwriting My second child was destined to have learning difficulties; he exhibited all the signs He now is meeting all his milestones I am currently working on a MEd in Curriculum Development The research that others and I have done on language arts curricula demonstrate that methods based on Dr Samuel Orton's work are superior to all others The Spalding Method written by a teacher is far easier to teach and more logical for the students than all the curricula I have reviewed People who are interested in notes that help with this method can go to my website at wwwshalomranchorg Look for the WRTR icon and then "notes" This is a free service
