Brave opponents of the Roman Empire

Celtic warriors were among the most Fierce and unpredictable opponents of the Roman Empire. Between the 5th century BCE and the 1st century CE, the Celts ruled large swaths of Europe.

For a Celtic warrior, courage and military prowess determined their status among their tribesmen. The ferocity with which they fought inspired fear even among the well-armed Romans. Their military culture was based on impetuous attack, courage, and honor. They often fought naked, covered in blue dye (woad) to instill fear in their enemies.

Their primary weaponry was a spear, shield, and sword, while elite warriors donned chain mail and helmets of bronze or iron, which were eventually adopted even by the Roman army. Celtic shields—often painted and adorned with magical symbols—were not only a defense but also a symbol of tribal affiliation and spiritual protection.

Despite their courage and brutality, the Celts were conquered by the growing power of Rome. Despite this, they never surrendered, and uprisings against the empire often broke out in their territories.

Their legend survives to this day in European folklore, literature, and art. Now you have the chance to see them rise up against Rome anew – in brick form!

COBI’s Imperium Romanum collection lets you immerse yourself in the world of the ancient Romans! Build your own replicas of military equipment and vehicles, construct a training ground for your gladiators, collect minifigures, and more.
