Product Description:

What better way to ground your studies of ancient history than with a solid understanding of the geography of those cultures? Written in a similar style to the first two volumes, the third in the A Child's Geography series explores the classical world – including Italy, Greece, Malta and the Balkans in 15 chapters. The text in each chapter transports readers to the region, imagining that they are touring the country, weaving in details of people they may meet as well as the history and stories of some of the buildings and sites. Full-color pictures of the landscape, landmarks and ruins adorn just about every page, giving readers the chance to see the places visited in the text. I also love how children are introduced to popular foods of the culture and the easy-to-follow recipes that are included! Activity pages are varied and include short answer questions, mapping exercises, seek-a-word puzzles, timeline activities, and travel journal suggestions. Review lessons and flashcard suggestions are also included to aid student learning. While the content of this course makes it a perfect companion to an ancient history study, you can also enjoy it on its own. You can work through it in a year spending two weeks on each chapter or spend a semester on it going through one chapter a week. Even if you haven't tried either of the previous volumes, I would encourage you to jump into this one; it is well-produced, interesting and you will learn an incredible amount about the geography and culture (present and past) of the birthplace of Western Civilization. Recommended resources include Map Trek (item # 048151) and Wonders of Old (item # 042591) timeline book. Includes NIV Scripture references, although families can easily use the version of their choice. 442 pgs, pb. ~ Jess/Deanne

Publisher Description:

Using a mix of geography and history, your students will learn about the classical world, and the story of different people groups leaving Babel and spreading their culture and influence around the world. A Child’s Geography Vol. 3: Explore the Classical World is designed for students in the 4th – 6th grade level. It is scheduled for 3-day weeks over a year-long interactive journey. Students completing this course will:

  • Explore the countries surrounding the Mediterranean Sea, including Greece and Italy
  • Visit the Balkan Peninsula to explore Albania, North Macedonia, Serbia, and more
  • Discover historic sites that include castles, monasteries, fortresses, windmills, and ancient ruins
  • See how Christians like the Apostle Paul and others helped bring God’s Word to the world

Biblical Worldview

We approach this journey from a biblical worldview that affirms the truth of God’s Word. As part of the course, students will learn about each country’s history, which in a few cases includes very brief details about their false gods, such as the Greek “gods” of Olympus. In today’s popular culture, these “gods” are often portrayed as heroes in movies, comic books, and more. We, however, have chosen to take the factual approach, making clear these stories are myths about false gods while reaffirming the eternal truths of the one true God as presented in His Holy Word.

Course components include:

  • Travel Log notes at the end of each section to sum up important points
  • Travel Journal at the end of each chapter to record trip highlights, favorites, and more
  • Supply list, recipes, and crafts
  • Worksheets, chapter tests, final exam, glossary, and answer key
  • Maps and activities to promote map-reading skills
  • A helpful course calendar for easy scheduling.

Category Description for A Child's Geography (Masterbooks):
Written in the conversational style of Hillyer's Child's Geography of the World, this introductory geography study incorporates engaging text and a variety of activities to bring geography alive. Geography of the earth is approached as if you and your children were taking a journey through and around the earth, learning everything about the Earth as a whole, as well as the individual continents and countries as you journey through each volume. This series is currently being updated by Master Books, so please contact us to verify the in-stock editions. If you are familiar with the previous edition, you will notice that much of the readings are the same. Visually and organizationally, there are notable differences in the Master Book editions from the introductory information and recommended 3-day per week schedule, updated graphics, and reproducible (for your family) worksheets. As someone who used the first editions of these volumes, I greatly appreciate Master Book’s efforts to make them more user-friendly, as well as to add more vibrant illustrations to engage learners (and parents!) Excellent Geography Course
As a big fan of the series A Child's Geography, I was so excited to see that Volume 3, Explore the Classical World, had been updated. This series is phenomenal; my kids have loved going through it!

This course is set up to follow a 36 week schedule, 3 days a week, at a 4th grade level. I find the content to be age appropriate, but also flexible enough for use in family learning with different ages and levels of learning.

One of the reasons I have enjoyed using this series is that it is very open and go. Any materials or supplies that you need are listed by chapter at the beginning of the book. The text is set up in a way that each chapter is divided into each day's readings, and the adventure challenges are typically on stand-alone pages. This is great for those who buy the digital format - so easy to just print out the worksheets!

At the back of the text, chapter reviews are included that can be used for additional worksheets or as graded quizzes. A final exam is also included. The answer keys for all adventure challenges, chapter reviews, and the final exam are all found at the end of the book.

I appreciate the variety of activities throughout this course, it is never boring! It is very hands on and interactive. My kids loved the travel journal that was at the end of each chapter that allowed them to reflect on the leg of the journey they just finished. Activities include map work, creating a timeline, cooking recipes from the various countries, and many more, all with a biblical worldview woven through.

This course is a great addition to any homeschool family. I would recommend it to anyone looking for a biblically sound geography course that will keep your kids excited for their next journey!

Perfect geography course
My 7th grader is currently using this alongside World's story 2 and she absolutely loves it! This is our first book we have used in the series and my daughter has requested to continue the whole series! The revision of the course is so beautiful and full of wonderful pictures- it is truly stunning. Workload is 3 days a week, but of course can be revised to fit any schedule. All work is done within the book where the author takes a conversational approach at introducing your child to a country in the classical world. Mapping activities, journaling activities and recipes for each country make this such a fun and exciting course. I love to hear the wonderful things my daughter is learning in the classical world and enjoy the activities and recipes that enrich her learning.

This would make a wonderful morning basket course to do as a family, a great read for any history loving parent and of course for your child! I am currently adding each volume of this series to my other children's future schooling plans for social studies.
