Publisher Description:

For seventh grade skills and up, Wordsmith is the perfect companion to Learning Language Arts Through Literature. For young people who want to improve their writing skills, step-by-step instructions are provided that will help any writer improve his techniques. The introduction provides a brief review of grammar followed by instruction on building stronger sentences, exercise in descriptive and narrative writing, creating dialogue, story writing, and writing from a particular point of view. Plus, the essential skills of every good writer, practice in proofreading and revising.

Category Description for Wordsmith (6-9):

Lessons build from focusing on interesting word usage to sentence construction, to scene-setting, characterization, and well-written dialogue, and culminate in the writing of a short story at the end. Students can complete the course in about a year, but you might want to alternate lessons with grammar instruction, other technical skills instruction, or other types of writing and "stretch out" the use of Wordsmith over a longer time period.

Category Description for Wordsmith Series:

Written by a homeschooling mom, the presentation of topics and skills in this book is outstanding! Instructions are directed to the student and interesting assignments encourage even reluctant writers. The book allows ample room to write exercises in, but students can also use regular paper so that you can re-use with several children. This book has also been revised, and the new edition features additional exercises and examples, an expanded section on writing short stories, additional explanation and examples of revision, and review/practice quizzes. An inexpensive teacher's guide is available for parents who want the extra help in teaching creative writing and includes answers, lesson plans, teaching suggestions, and ideas for expanding the lessons. This guide has also been revised, and includes more explanation of the "philosophy" of writing, further tips on revising, and more ideas for additional writing assignments.

I chose this to go with her English curriculum this year. I am building what I hope is a good solid modpoge of workbooks that I can assign daily for my daughter to have more independence in study and help me stay on track with minimal planning. Hopefully the teacher ed. will help me organize her year in learning

Great reviews; looking for something that is not burdensome in approach. Son has dyslexia and dysgraphia.

I read about it in Cathy Duffy Reviews and it was on her 102 top picks list. It sounded like a good fit for my children.

While I think the Wordsmith program is useful the teacher's guide only really outlines which lessons should be done each week It does not provide useful answers or guidelines to the exercises
