Publisher Description:

Reading Comprehension Book 1 includes 31 selections in the following 7 subject areas. A sample passage title is given for each subject area:

  • Social Studies - Sacajawea
  • Science - How Rocks are Made
  • Philosophy, Logic, and Language - Pandora
  • Combined Subjects - How Insects Communicate
  • Math - The History of Numerals
  • Literature - A Different Kind of Home
  • The Arts - The Art of Creating Cartoons

In each lesson, the presentation of the passage consistently follows the same 7-step format:

  • About the Passage - introduces the selection to the reader and activates prior knowledge
  • Reason for Reading - explains the reading skill emphasized
  • The Selection - thematically organized selections across subject matter.
  • Thinking it Over - lists two to three broad questions to be answered in writing
  • Studying the Passage - asks questions about the main idea, facts, and sequence, and asks students to draw conclusions, make assumptions, and interpret.
  • Using the Words - encourages students to use new vocabulary words in a paragraph
  • Writing about It - has students answer questions about the contents of the selection and offer their interpretation or opinion

Skills Addressed

  • Story recall
  • Sequencing
  • Identifying facts
  • Drawing conclusions
  • Vocabulary development
  • Main idea
  • Extending thoughts in writing
  • Inference

Each workbook in the Reading Comprehension Series has selections covering social studies, science, literature, mathematics, philosophy, logic, language, and the arts.

Out of the many comprehension workbooks I have used and reviewed, this series is my personal favorite. It contains great variety in subject matter and excellent thinking questions. Before reading each of the 31 reading selections per book, a short introduction gives a little background information and states the reading skill to be emphasized. Selections include pieces on general topics, mathematics, philosophy, literature, science, social studies, logic and thinking, language, and the arts. Because this is a secular program, you may choose to preview some of the reading selections, particularly in the upper grades. Following the selections are questions which require students to find the main idea, identify sequence, draw conclusions, make assumptions, match vocabulary words to meanings, and identify and interpret facts. Although this series is my favorite, our children are not as certain, since these books really made them think. Please note that there are no answers included in the workbooks. All answers are provided in the small Teacher Keys, available for each workbook as a separate but inexpensive purchase.

I wanted to try something different. We have been using Evan-Moor reading comp for years. I hope to like how the passages are non-fiction based.

Do the lessons need to be done in sequence, or would it work just as well to skip around, for example to do a social studies passage one day followed by a science passage the next?

BEST ANSWER: We would skip around and it worked great for us. I think the order has more to do with what you decide you would like to teach through the resource. I used it as a way to check my child's reading comprehension skills while she was also reading longer books.
How do you know which level to place a student in?

BEST ANSWER: They don't use grade levels on purpose as every student is different. I suggest you look at the sample reading passages for each level to see if that is how much your student is able to process without becoming overwhelmed. As each level progresses, the passages get more complex as well as the comprehension questions. Generally Early Reading Comprehension is aimed at lower elementary and Reading Comprehesion is upper elementary.
Is there an answer key?
A shopper on Mar 31, 2019
BEST ANSWER: Yes, there is an answer key (#003425). It is a separate purchase but is inexpensive.

Great for practicing comprehension
I really like these books. I am a private tutor, and these are some of my favorite books to practice reading comprehension. The selections are varied and interesting. The questions start at lower levels and move on to involve higher level thinking. There are great suggestions for related writing activites.
