Product Description:

When a young Egyptian boy is orphaned, his life changes. Although he has always desired to become an apprentice to the goldsmith in whose shop he works, his half-brother, now his guardian, apprentices him to the stone cutters instead. The mystery begins as he learns a secret that may explain his half-brother's seemingly unearned wealth...

Publisher Description:

Winner of a Newbery Honor, an exciting ancient Egyptian mystery!

Ranofer wants only one thing in the world: to be a master goldsmith like his beloved father was. But how can he when he is all but imprisoned by his evil half brother, Gebu? Ranofer knows the only way he can escape Gebu's abuse is by changing his destiny. But can a poor boy with no skills survive on the cutthroat streets of ancient Thebes? Then Ranofer finds a priceless golden goblet in Gebu's room and he knows his luck−and his destiny−are about to change.

Category Description for Beautiful Feet History & Geography:

Beautiful Feet curriculum takes a multi-level, living book approach to teaching history, geography and world cultures, using easy to use Guides for the teacher and engaging, well-written literature for the student. The Guides provide book lists, chapter readings, discussion and research questions, background information, website links, answer keys, and more. See our website for lists of literature resources to accompany each guide. Most guides provide content for one year of study, with the exception of Geography through Literature and Western Expansion. The latter two are recommended to be completed together for one year of study. Numbers of lessons vary, and are scheduled 1 to 4 days per week. Recommended Timelines are available individually or in a set of two. Timelines are cardstock and include the figures referenced in the study. Students will need to color, cut and assemble the timeline and figures. History and geography come alive with these well done literature guides. See our website for required books for each guide. Some guides and resources contain Christian content while others do not; contact us for additional information.

Good story but lots of paganism
This story is very good - fast-paced, intriguing, can't put it down. However, there is a lot of Egyptian religion in the book, including a lot about spirits/ghosts, charms, spells and the like. Probably that makes the story more realistic, however, I would be cautious about reading this to younger children, especially sensitive ones.

This is an excellent book! I read it aloud to my 5 and 6 year olds as part of our unit study on Egypt We had to take it slow at first as the language is somewhat advanced for their age but within a couple of chapters they began to ask "can we read more about Ranofer (the main character)?" If you're looking for a great piece of literature to enliven your study of Egypt this is it! It is historically correct and is filled with details that bring Egyptian culture alive Highly recommended!

This piece of literature a Newbery Medal winner was a great addition to our family's study of ancient Egypt It was a suspenseful adventure yet filled with the colors sights and sounds of life in a large Egyptian city I read it aloud to my children ages 7 to 14 parallel to our reading of the Biblical account of the Jews' servitude in Egypt found in Exodus We prayerfully discussed the polytheistic beliefs and death-orientation of their culture very evident in this book and very obvious to my children A great addition to our home library!
