Category Description for Short Lessons in World History:

It's difficult (ambitious, even) to cover world history in a year. A lot of information gets left out. Just the same, it's good to have a framework to work from, even if you intend to "flesh it out." Written at a 5th grade level (making it usable at a lower age than listed above), this course would be an ideal self-study overview of world history for any student, or it would provide short summaries of period history that you elaborate on using supplementary materials. It is a unique book in that it is broken down into "bite-sized" chunks to be completed daily, each followed by a short comprehension exercise. These include fill-ins, multiple choice, puzzles, and map questions. Scattered throughout the material are 12 mini-biographies of major figures in World History - notables like Winston Churchill, Florence Nightingale, Charlemagne, etc. While from a secular publisher, I found no evolutionary content, the first civilization in Sumer begins "nearly 6,000 years ago," and there are several references to the Bible. While certainly not comprehensive, the text is interesting, easy to understand, and inexpensive. Visuals are not glitzy, text is two-colored, and many consist of clip-art type graphics. However, maps are extremely clear. A glossary and answer key are provided in the text. Text is reproducible. This text would be helpful to acquire a "big picture" view of world history.

I chose Short Lessons as our spine curriculum for World History because I appreciate the timeline and geography components and that it is not explicitly Christian. The lessons are, indeed, SHORT, but for our purposes that is perfect as we will be incorporating research projects and primary source text analysis using the Classical Historian's Take a Stand! World History book. Besides being very brief, there are irritating spelling errors. I may pay my students to find them!

My 10th grader is STEM focused, but I'd like him to have a general overview of world history. I'm hoping he finds this acceptable, as I'm looking for the basics without a lot of extraneous reading.

As a high school special education teacher, I found that it was extremely difficult to differentiate the general education text for my students. So I found this text written on a grade 5 readability level and will try it with my students. Should work much better than packets and copies.

I chose this book because my daughter was having trouble with longer, very detailed lessons and could not retain the information. Shorter more concise lessons will hopefully be more enjoyable to her.

i chose this book because I was very pleased with the Short Lessons in World History, that I purchased previously for one of my students. I have another student in 8th grade U.S. History and I thought he might enjoy his walk through U.S. History using this similar supplement .

Looking for a World History text for my 7th grader, with ADD. We've tried others, online & in print, but haven't found the right mix of important content and short, attention-getting lessons. If these lessons prove too simple, we may supplement with more research or a hands-on project for the lessons that grab her interest. Fingers crossed!

There are so many resources to choose from, but when I came across this I decided to buy. It's a great book to get started and will allow me time to look some more to fulfill our curriculum requirements. It was a welcomed relief!<br />It is a good overview and appears to cover lots of good info with unit tests.

Are the work pages all multiple choice? Or are there some short answer?
A shopper on Mar 29, 2022
BEST ANSWER: The review sections are crossword puzzles, multiple choice, true/false, mapwork, fill in the blank, and other various types of review. I don't recall seeing any short answer in the review sections, but you could use the "critical thinking" as short answer/essay prompts.
Is this the 2019 edition?

BEST ANSWER: We currently have the 2006 edition.
Would this be okay for an 11th grader who has not take World History? He did take a class in 6th grade in when he was in public school called World Cultures....not sure if it is the same.
A shopper on Apr 23, 2019
BEST ANSWER: It is a good resource and over view of World history but is not a complete history course. Used with research papers and extra videos I have made this book work for many grade levels.

A Good Book For A Quick Look at History
I would recommend this book to anyone who wants a brief overview of world history. The reading is simple and easy to understand, and the study questions are easy to do and they 're not all fill-in-the-blank. There are some crossword puzzles and other types of questions in the book. If you want a more in-depth view of world history then I would suggest another history book or you could watch documentaries about the events in the book.

Meh.
Well, it's short, cheap and sequential. It's also boring. I haven't used it yet, might not use it at all. If I use it at all, I would need to correct for some things that are oversimplified to the point of inaccuracy and/or bias. I think the authors are trying to draw comparisons to modern day, but it ends up sounding like a modern politician's sound bite.

For example, the reason why Rome was weakening was because "The Romans had too many slaves and had grown lazy. Far too many people were on welfare or supported by the government. The Roman rulers spent too much money on armies and they raised the taxes too high..."

I think I want my kids to be thinking of history in slightly more complex terms than that.

This book was used as a spine in our studies I incorporated library books and videos to go along with the short lessons in this text It has great short bios of historical figures This is a secular text but I didn't find anything offensive here Strictly history There are critical thinking questions throughout the lessons and review questions along with map activities are at the end of lessons The teachers guide is just a book of black lined maps to incorporate I think it's great to use this course as a literature study of world history
