My boys and girls alike love these books Two of my children made the leap to reading chapter books on their own after I read a couple of books from this series out loud to them The stories are compelling and as other reviews have noted the children cooperate take pleasure in hard work and service are respectful (even to those they think might be the "bad guys" in the mystery at hand and don't jump to conclusions Many of the books indirectly include educational information about geographic places and environments (such as Chicago the Everglades and Western ranches) but they also celebrate home-town themes such as recreational sports charity events local history and helping extended family The volumes we own are well worn from repeated reading and our weekly load from the library usually includes at least one book from the Boxcar series

These are perfect books for children who want something meaty and parents who want quality literature with wholesome characters We loved this series and they were read over and over for years in our home The characters are respectful and have a real love and devotion for each other Owning this series is like owning a treasure chest!
