Product Description:

Readers will enjoy an interesting look at not only the man, but the 19th century world in which he lived. Britain's enormous growth and emergence as a democracy, Germany united under Bismarck, Russia freeing the serfs, Japan opened to foreign trade, the U.S. in turmoil over slavery and many other cultural and socio/economic events are all shared in Foster's engaging text laced with her traditional pictures, maps, time lines and graphs. (description by Beautiful Feet)

Publisher Description:

With her whimsical and informative illustrations and timelines Foster has magnificently captured a remarkable age and a remarkable man. Originally published in 1944, Foster earned her reputation by her masterful display of "horizontal history"—telling the story of world events in the geo-political sphere, while giving as much importance to advances in science, medicine, music, literature, and exploration.

Thus, while Abe Lincoln was a boy romping the woods of Kentucky, Thomas Jefferson was completing his eighth year as president, George III reigned in Great Britain and Napoleon was about to meet his Waterloo. Beethoven and Sir Walter Scott were at the height of their creative powers, while Victor Hugo was staging plays at school. By the time Lincoln was old enough to help his father chop wood, other young boys and girls were being prepared for the future parts they would play.

Harriet Beecher was reading anything she could get her hands on, Charles Darwin was collecting toads, crabs and shells, and the impoverished boy Dickens was working in a shoe blacking factory in London. When Lincoln opened his shop in Salem, David Livingstone was opening up deepest Africa, and thousands of Americans were opening up the West on the Oregon Trail. The spirit of freedom was moving around the globe as the abolitionist movement gained power in the States and serfdom saw its demise in Russia. Technologically the world was bursting with the invention of the telegraph, the railroad and the steamboat.

Highlighting well-written books, students go deeper into historical events and people at the Intermediate level. Short writing prompts, note booking, and higher-level questions enhance learning.
Category Description for Beautiful Feet History & Geography:

Beautiful Feet curriculum takes a multi-level, living book approach to teaching history, geography and world cultures, using easy to use Guides for the teacher and engaging, well-written literature for the student. The Guides provide book lists, chapter readings, discussion and research questions, background information, website links, answer keys, and more. See our website for lists of literature resources to accompany each guide. Most guides provide content for one year of study, with the exception of Geography through Literature and Western Expansion. The latter two are recommended to be completed together for one year of study. Numbers of lessons vary, and are scheduled 1 to 4 days per week. Recommended Timelines, Maps , or a Composition Book maybe available. See individual courses for more details. Timelines are cardstock and include the figures referenced in the study. Students will need to color, cut and assemble the timeline and figures. History and geography come alive with these well done literature guides. See our website for required books for each guide. Some guides and resources contain Christian content while others do not; contact us for additional information.

Needed for Ambleside Online, but I chose to purchase this (instead of borrowing from the library) because I love the idea of the connections of what was going on in other parts of the world during American history. I want an integrated approach to history for my children.

Last year I bought Colombus' World by the same author and while a little cumbersome in content for my 6th grader, it had fantastic information, beautiful illustrations and painted a full picture of what was happening at that particular moment in history around the world. I will read this aloud to all my kids as a history supplement.

We LOVE this series
This book is wonderful! I wish all of history could be studied this way!
The author looks at the life of a famous person (in this case, President Lincoln), dividing his life into a few time periods (while Lincoln was a boy, while he was working here or doing this or that), and tells a dozen or so other events that were going on in other parts of the world during that time. Events that began "while Lincoln was a boy" are continued in the later sections, as they unfolded in history.
This is one of the school books that I am keeping.
