Category Description for Horizons Curriculum:

Alpha Omega Horizons is a Bible-based, fast-paced, spiral approach to learning introduction, review, reinforcement. This works well for students who catch on quickly, with constant review that keeps concepts fresh. These are teacher-led courses with colorful student workbooks and thorough teacher manuals. This curriculum offers two courses at the preschool level Preschool for Three's and Horizons Preschool, something not offered in other AOP curriculum lines. These two levels lay a solid foundation for future elementary levels. Although not available for as many subject areas as LIFEPAC or SOS, Horizons is comprehensive in the subjects that are offered. Math is available for K-8, Phonics & Reading for K-3, Spelling & Vocabulary for 1-3, Penmanship for 1-5, Health for K-8, and Physical Education for PK-12.

Alpha Omega Horizons now offers complete curriculum sets for kindergarten through 3rd grade. At the kindergarten level, the set includes Horizons Health, Horizons Phonics & Reading, and Horizons Math. First through third grades sets include Horizons Math, Horizons Health, Horizons Phonics & Reading, Horizons Spelling & Vocabulary, and Horizons Penmanship. These sets include all of the required books for each subject both student and teacher.

Category Description for Complete Programs - Phonics:

Programs in this section go beyond teaching children how to read, incorporating phonetic readers, spelling and writing as well. Arranged roughly by grade/age.

Category Description for Horizons Phonics and Reading:

Starting with alpha-phonetic animals like Katie Kangaroo, Ollie Octopus, and Zippy Zebra (each engagingly illustrated), this creative and colorful material from Alpha Omega is a complete phonetically-based word recognition and reading program. With all the elements one expects to find in an excellent, easy-to-use program, basic concepts are approached in several ways for emphasis. Concepts are presented one at a time while review of previous material helps student achieve mastery. Sounds - the basic building blocks of reading - are presented phonetically and are practiced in words, word lists, word families, and short sentences. There is also a strong emphasis on general language arts skills and comprehension.

The Kindergarten program starts with letter recognition and consonant and short vowel sounds, but it also includes consonant digraphs and blends, silent "e," double vowels, "r"controlled vowels, vowel diphthongs, beginning silent letters (w,k,b,g,gh,gn), "le"endings, and a few non-phonetic word families (alk, ph, old, ost, olt, ild ind). Proper nouns, sentences, and creative writing complement the spelling and vocabulary development for basic language arts instruction.

Reviewing previous concepts starts the First Grade coursework, which continues with vowel pairs, contractions, compound words, prefixes and suffixes, "x" words, "y" as a vowel, and irregular plurals. Language arts instruction includes capitalization, punctuation, writing lessons (stories, letters, personal narratives, poems, and journal entries), possessives, synonyms, antonyms, and homonyms as well as alphabetical order (to second letter).

Second Grade starts with a comprehensive review of phonics concepts and progresses to more advanced phonics (schwa sounds, triple consonant blends, inflected endings, final adjacent clusters, silent letters, and long vowel digraphs). There is more emphasis on reading fluency and comprehension at this level. Stories are 4-5 pages long, each one introduced by a maxim and a single introductory picture. Some stories take the student beyond the concrete into an imaginary make-believe world.

The focus on the Third Grade course is encouraging a love of reading through the stories and poems of its two illustrated student readers. As in previous courses, there is both review and reinforcement of previously taught phonics. New concepts are introduced - compound words, regular and irregular verbs, inflected endings, palindromes, and more. 160 daily lessons.

The Horizons courses are notable for their balance between teacher/student interaction and independent student work. The Teacher Guides include reduced copies of the consumable student workbooks. They provide easy-to-follow concept presentation and activities with clearly stated objectives. There is very little teacher preparation - just being familiar in advance with each lesson and collecting the necessary materials and supplies. These supplies are quite basic and readily available, such as a white board or chalkboard, phonics rules and word flashcards (made as needed), and a dictionary. The workbooks are bright and colorful. The student readers use a distinctive print font that is easy on the eyes and utilizes the forms of letters being taught (i.e. a manuscript "g" rather than the more typical printed "g"). Program is from a Christian publisher, so stories have noticeable moral content, but little religious content. There is either a review (kindergarten) or test (1st and 2nd grade) every ten lessons. Each course contains 160 lessons. The complete sets for each grade level include the student workbooks, readers, and teacher guides, but these items are also available for separate purchase. The K complete set also includes an alphabet floor puzzle and a small (8.5" x 11") wipe-off lined writing "tablet" (board). ~ Janice

In my opinion the best phonics/reading curriculum available to homeschoolers. It almost appears too simple to start, but it is very effective for all types of learners!

How does it work?

BEST ANSWER: The set comes complete with Phonics workbook, readers, and the teacher manual. The teacher manual gives you tips on what you can do everyday. They can do some work in the workbooks (divided up into lessons), and then practice reading the corresponding selection to the lesson in the readers. A very complete and thorough program. Books are in full color, but not obnoxious.

I bought this curriculum for my daughter when she was six and had already gone through another K curriculum that was light The main thing that I liked about the program was how easy it was to use on the part of the parent Very little preparation is needed It is very solid in teaching all aspects of phonics That being said however it advances very quickly I can't imagine having used it with her at five as a starting curriculum It worked though for a first grade curriculum In my opinion a person could even do half of the curriculum for K and the second half for first because there is a lot to it I was not able to finish it with her in the one year The other issue I had with it was the readers There is a story to go with each lesson but they are for the parent to read aloud to the child in order for the student to hear the phonics sounds applied in the story Later as the child advances in reading from practicing through the work text they are supposed to start reading themselves at the first story when you feel they are ready That worked for a few weeks for us but then the stories became too difficult for her to read so I had to find my own readers that I felt were at her level She also tired of having to fill in so many workbook pages each day which were often between 5 and 7 per lesson That is why we could not finish it in nine months because I would often have to split up one lesson into two days I bought this because it was the program that RR uses for its Complete Package K curriculum Please understand that this curriculum does move very quickly and you may have to fill in with other readers So I would recommend it but with these cautions We are now using All About Reading this year which I will review soon

This phonics curriculum is great for advanced students My daughter already knew how to read a little before starting this and knew all her letters & letter sounds This has really kept her challenged If you are looking for a phonics/reading program for advanced or gifted students I highly recommend Horizons The Horizons Math curriculum is also great for advanced students

I thought this was a great program It provides a very step-by-step approach to learning to read My daughter could only read a few sight words when we started and now she is almost at a 2nd grade reading level I thought some lessons were a bit long so I did divide some lessons in half You do need the teacher's manual As stated in another review some of the pictures are a bit confusing There is no teacher prep I have a 3 year old and I will use this program with her I thought it was money well spent

We are using Horizons Phonics and Reading K this year and I would like to share about it First I think it is perfect for a student who is starting kindergarten already knowing most of the letters of the alphabet their basic sounds how to blend words and how to write a few letters at least This describes my son exactly and we are loving the program For a student who struggles with writing (like my daughter did) doesn't know any letters yet or for a mom who doesn't have a basic familiarity with phonics I think it would be a difficult program to use On the plus side it contains plenty of handwriting practice with specific formation practice for each letter and even copy work of sentences so no additional handwriting program is needed in my opinion On the negative side it is very handwriting-intensive which not all kindergarten children are ready for One difficulty we have run into is the presence of pictures which are somewhat confusing (a picture of a fish meant to be "cod") All of the answers are in the teacher manual of course so the problem is easily solved by telling the child the word The teacher manual is 100% necessary though The teacher needs some understanding of teaching phonics because some topics are used before they are taught in a lesson and you need to teach them on the spot They also use the approach of having the child sound out two letters together (ba be bi bo bu) which is confusing when you come to things such as "do" and "no" which are actual words I overcome this by emphasizing that it is two letters together and not a word I strongly dislike this type of approach but I like the program so much I can overlook it! All in all though I think this is an excellent rigorous program well-suited to homeschool children who learn quickly There is no preparation required you really do just open the book and go The package includes readers with a story for each question making it a really complete program I have tried several other programs and this is my favorite! My son is making amazing progress in his reading

After looking (and looking) over several phonics programs I purchased Horizons Phonics K and could not have been more pleased with my choiceThe student workbooks have colorful pages and the teacher's manual features a smaller copy of the student workbook pages (with answers filled in) which helps you and your child to read together Simple teaching instructions are included in each lesson so that everything is located in one place There is very little preparation which is a big plus!I have used this with my daughter and son and have loaned it to a friend to use so it has been well worth the money Their learning styles are very different but both excelled with this program When tested in reading both have been 2 or more levels higher than their actual gradeThe set includes a small lined dry erase board and marker teacher's manuals student workbooks student readers and a puzzle poster featuring each letter of the alphabet with a drawing of an animal or object that begins with that letter These drawings are also found throughout the workbooks I did not cut up the puzzle poster but placed it on the wall for them to use when needed This was helpful when alphabetizing words and also to remind them of what sound the letters makeI also purchased Horizons Phonics 1 and enjoyed using it
