Category Description for Winston Grammar:

So, you want to include grammar in your studies - but all that diagramming and dissecting of sentences doesn't appeal? How about a more hands-on, participative approach? Winston Grammar is a grammar method using very little writing, no diagramming and is a truly kinesthetic program. Colorful "clue" cards containing the parts of speech (with definitions) are used in lieu of diagramming. These cards are laid out in the same pattern as the sentence; the goal is for students to reach an intuitive understanding of the use of the parts of speech and language structure. As students learn more parts of speech and their functions, additional cards are added. On the back side of the clue cards are instructions showing Winston Grammar marking conventions so you may progress to using these to identify parts of speech in a sentence (ie; underline nouns once, verbs twice, etc.). The regular program is sufficient for 3-4 years of grammar instruction. Since the mastery approach of learning is used, you can start at any age or grade level, but the basic course should be completed before progressing to the advanced program. The advanced program contains a review of the material covered in the basic program, then progresses to more complex grammatical structures. Note that Winston Grammar does not cover punctuation or verb usage, but these are commonly found in other English coursework.

Several supplemental items are also available. The Basic Program Supplementary Workbook contains 30 additional consumable worksheets that provide more practice for students using basic Winston Grammar. Tests and quizzes are included right in the workbook. You may purchase the additional workbook without an answer key or as a set. Winston Word Works is an extension of the Basic program. It teaches proper usage of words that are commonly misused - like lie and lay, who and whom, I and me, etc. - and is meant to be used between the Basic and Advanced Programs. Word Works includes a teacher book, a student workbook and cards.

We have used Basic Winston Grammar and I loved it. Now that the kiddos are in high school it was the obvious choice for grammar study.

My son, who does not enjoy studying English and grammar, used Winston basic level, and enjoyed the hands on approach with the cards enough to ask to use their advanced level to continue grammar study.

The pictures show the same cards for both the Basic and the Advanced cards. Is there actually a difference?

BEST ANSWER: There are additional of each of the cards from the Basic sentence which are necessary to build the longer sentences in the Advanced, as well as some additional cards. If you are planning to have your student build the entire sentence with the cards, which may very well be necessary with some students, then both packs are needed. But you do need to purchase the Advanced cards to do the Advanced level.

Reach All students with grammar
I taught in a very small private school for 34 years and I began using Winston Grammar about four years after I began teaching. I found it to be the most effective way to teach parts of speech it reached all three types of learners. Students would first lay out cards on their desk according to the designation of each word they had learned and then we would go over the new part of speech being learned that day until it was mastered.
After that we would lay our the cards for the new word then I would call on a student to tell each part of speech and why they chose it. At that point, all students were asked to write the appropriate designation over the words in the sentence in their book. Each page of the book took about 15 minutes to complete and then we would move on to other elements of grammar such as punctuation, capitalization or vocabulary study. This is the greatest book I’ve found to help students learn parts of speech which is no longer taught in most public schools.
