Product Description:

In Spelling Plus 1000 Words toward Spelling Success, author Susan Anthony addresses her concerns of the difficulty students may encounter in applying what is learned from their spelling lessons to their actual writing. One of her recommendations was to incorporate the practice of dictation. The Spelling Dictation Resource Book, specifically written by Anthony to supplement Spelling Plus, provides the links between spelling, language mechanics, and real life writing applications. The goal of this book is to help students achieve balance between creativity and grammatical correctness in writing.

In a concerted effort to help save time, this book provides sample sentences for dictation that correspond to the spelling lists presented in Spelling Plus. With the exception of the kindergarten lists, sentences are provided for each lesson; 20 for lists 4-47 and 10 for lists 48-69. All the spelling words from the previous week's lesson, as well as words that may follow the same spelling patterns that have been taught, are covered in the current dictation lesson. Additional features of this book include suggestions on how to use the Spelling Plus 1000 core words as a basis in teaching many language skills such as capitalization and punctuation as well as word histories for each of the 1000 words. In just 15-20 minutes a day, your child will quickly become proficient in checking and correcting his or her own written work while attaining the skill where writing is done with almost no conscious thought. ~ Enh

I love the Spelling Plus book. It is laid out so well. And I have gone through sooooooo many spelling programs. You really have to do some reading before you start, to understand how to teach in this program, and it is teacher intensive. But, not nearly as much as All About Spelling.

This book seems to add to the program, and I just want more! ;)

Easy to use with Spelling Plus. since it gives you sentences to use for dictation instead of making up your own.

I finally found a spelling curriculum I love! After trying them all! It presents spelling rules and phonics rules in a precise format. And you don't really know if you can spell unless you can spell it in your writing. Great, easy to use instruction!

Could this be used with Writing Road to Reading?
A shopper on Jun 4, 2019
BEST ANSWER: You could theoretically use the two together but they are coming from different approaches. Writing Road to Reading is a phonograms first approach to spelling. Everything is based on learning the phonograms - and in the order presented. Subsequently, the emphasis is on encoding the words. The Spelling Dictation Resource Book is based on 1000 most important to know words so its emphasis is more on learning the whole word.

Best way to teach dictation and reinforce spelling
I burned through 4 other spelling curriculums before finding this one. My search is over! Charlotte Mason people would love this way to teach dictation and spelling. We are classical eclectic so I can hand-pick each piece of our curriculum. Boy, did I find a winner with this spelling program! It's written by a brilliant teacher, not a commitee. That said, the creator did her research. I have read this book and the spelling book cover to cover, with my jaw on the ground during much of it. I know my 9 yr old will go to college with this book. There is THAT much good info in the back. Plus, she gives you so many ways to remember words, including origins. (Which caused me to then go buy a dictionary of word origins.) Ok, back to just the dictation book. I bought it after I read the spelling book cover to cover because if it was that good, I knew this book had to be too. Yup, I was right. It teaches the teacher how to dictate to the student. Then, it has several practice questions and answers, so the student gets use to listening, prior to actually incorporating dictation in with the spelling words. This is a few years worth of commitment since it covers 1,000 words. Totally worth it.

Love
This curriculum is great for retention. We do the spelling list one week with the dictation the next. That's two weeks of practice instead of spelling workouts one. I love the one time price for k-6. I can go back to previous lists skip forward if i want to know how they are going to tackle some word. Love this curriculum.

Great Practical Book for Spelling and Dictation!
This book brought my daughter's spelling up two grade levels. I highly recommend it. It lists words according to grade level your child should know. Then sentences are given for each list so you can dictate them to your child. There is also a guide on how to do dictation that is invaluable. Dictation helps the child retain memory of the spelling words they memorize. It is an absolute necessity. It is designed to be used with the Spelling Plus book.

Our family has used the Spelling Plus book for several years and it works well for us This Dictation book is a nice supplement to the main book It provides sentences for the teacher to dictate to the child to make sure they can spell the words from their previous lists It does require teacher involvement but not time for preparation It also includes thorough and helpful information on capitalization grammar prefixes and suffixes word histories and root words It is a time-saver but I would not say it is a necessary addition I don't use it every week but it is handy Since you can use it for at least 7 years of spelling lessons (K-6) for each child it easily pays for its convenience
