Product Description:

The meanings of words change over time. Take the word "marriage," for example. Who knows how a modern secular dictionary will define it tomorrow? Fortunately, we have a standard available that will not change, because the definitions are based on the word's Biblical usage and basis in one of 26 original languages. This reprint of Noah Webster's classic is nearly a textbook in itself, as it gives examples of word usage from classical literature and the Bible. What better way to understand the writings of America's founding fathers than to define their words as they would have understood them.

We prefer a dictionary with the original author's (Webster's) definitions of words, not a modern translation of word definitions. Webster also used the King James Version of the Bible- of course that was the only translation in 1828. We use this dictionary with searching the definitions of many Bible words along with Strong's Concordance.

It's important to know the meaning of words. Today there are some who read documents written a couple hundred years ago and believe they know what is being said. To comprehend these documents, one must comprehend the meaning of the words at the time they were written.

Is this volume II (Two)?
A shopper on Oct 7, 2021
BEST ANSWER: I don’t believe there is a first or second “volume.” It is the first edition “reproduced in facsimile” from an original 1828 copy.
Etymology included?
A shopper on Feb 11, 2021
BEST ANSWER: Etymology is included, but not in the " branched " sense. For example the word DIE as described in this dictionary : v.i. [ Sw. do ; Dan. doer. This appears to be a contracted word, and the radical letter lost is not obvious. The word dye, to tinge, is contracted from Dg, and the Arabic root signifies not only to tinge, but to perish ; which circumstance would lead one to infer that they are radically one word, and that the primary sense is to plunge, fall or sink. The Saxon deadian is evidently a derivative of the participle dead. See Dye. ]
How many pages?
A shopper on Feb 2, 2021
BEST ANSWER: It’s not actually numbered. The measurements are 11x8.5 inches (letter paper size) and it is 2.5 inches thick including the cover.
Is this book hardcover?
A shopper on Dec 28, 2020
BEST ANSWER: Yes. This dictionary is great if you are reading a lot of classical American and English literature. For more contemporary works it slows my student down as word use and context has changed so much over time and the definitions run deep. So we keep several dictionaries for comparison. I prefer older publish date dictionaries from second hand stores and also use online dictionaries for today's 'recrafting' of words.
What is the Font size please?

How does this dictionary defines the words "unicorn" and "dragon"? I know Satan must be pleased to know how God's word has been questioned for its speaking of creatures such as unicorns, which were actual ox/like animals and not mythological creatures.I would like to find a dictionary old enough to give the actual meaning of words for God's glory.
A shopper on Sep 13, 2020
BEST ANSWER: Unicorn:
1. An animal with one horn: the monoceros. This name is often applied to the rhinoceros.
2. The sea unicorn is a fish of the whale kind, called narwal, remarkable for a horn growing out of his nose.
3. A fowl

Dragon:
1. A kind of winged serpent, much celebrated in the romances of the middle ages.
2. A fiery, shooting meteor, or imaginary serpent.
3. A fierce, violent person, male or female.
4. A constellation of the northern hemisphere
In scripture, dragon seems sometimes to signify a large marine fish or serpent
Is this dictionary unabridged?
Amber on Aug 3, 2020
BEST ANSWER: I believe it’s unabridged. It seems very complete and I love that it’s not a modern, watered-down version. It’s worded as Webster wrote it. Definitely a worthwhile purchase.
How large is the print?
A shopper on Jan 23, 2020
BEST ANSWER: Per the supplier: “The definitions are New Times Roman font size 9.”
is this a biblical dictionary?
A shopper on Jul 13, 2018
BEST ANSWER: On the first page of this book is the Dedication..
The Foundation for American Christian Education dedicates this facsimile edition to the Christian students of America, who, under the guidance of their parents and teachers, are developing a character of obedience to God's principles of life and liberty.

A shopper on Feb 17, 2018
Does this dictionary use the schwa (upside down "e") in the pronunciation given for each word?
A shopper on Sep 25, 2016
BEST ANSWER: This dictionary does not give any pronunciations for any words. The word appears in bold with syllables and emphasis marks but no true pronunciation breakdown like modern day dictionaries.

Great for classics
This has been a life-saver for reading classic books! Our kids think this is the best dictionary we have ever owned because they can find the words easily and they can actually be found :-)

Great for historical value, not comprehensive enough for being the only dictionary
We appreciate the reflection of our values in this dictionary - it's a good reminder that truth doesn't change even when culture tries to say otherwise. This dictionary is worth it's weight in gold in terms of historical value (and that's saying something because it is HEAVY), but sadly it isn't able to be our only dictionary because we have found it lacks many words used in modern English, and I'm not talking about slang!

The best dictionary to use for studying
The 1828 is the best dictionary to use while studying the King James Bible. You do not need all the new definitions in the newer dictionaries.

One of my favorite resources!
My mom used this dictionary in my upbringing. It was my least favorite, yet most beneficial punishment. When I would misbehave, she would have me write a page (or two depending on my offense). I have written many of the pages in this magnificent book. I am currently using mine as a study companion book.
