Product Description:

Although designed as a high school course, IPC can be an excellent science course for pre-high school students. The full course equates to two high school transcript credits: Physics and Basic Chemistry. Teachers can elect to have students complete all twelve chapters in one year to earn two transcript credits. Another option is to divide the course in half, selecting six chapters to be completed for one transcript credit for Conceptual Physics (chapters 2, 4, 6, 9, 10, 12) or six chapters for one credit in Basic Chemistry (chapters 1, 3, 5, 7, 8, 11).

Includes all texts, activity packets, and Teacher's Resource Kit w/ digital downloads.

This high school science course introduces students to science and chemistry in an approachable, engaging way. Authored by John Hudson Tiner, the emphasis is on the people and principles that have made science into what it is today, not on memorizing and using formulas. The program is divided into 12 chapters, each packaged individually. While some chapters focus more exclusively on either chemistry or physics, many cover both. Throughout each chapter, plenty of anecdotes, biographies, and interesting details are shared, making it especially appealing to students who would otherwise probably not enjoy science as much. Designed as a two-credit course, six chapters of the course may also be studied for one credit (although local requirements may vary). Overall, a student will get a very thorough history and understanding of the science concepts in this course, but very little hands-on lab experience (the publisher cautions that additional lab classes may be needed for this program to count for the desired number of credits). However, this course may be a good option for the self-motivated student that does not have a solid math background, and is not looking to major in the sciences in college. - Jess

Category Description for Paradigm Accelerated Science Programs:

Designed specifically for self-study (although they can also be used in a classroom situation), these courses have a few things in common with Alpha Omega LIFEPACs. First of all, the course is broken down into booklet-sized increments. Secondly, the work is primarily reading and workbook activities. Hands-on "lab" activities are not incorporated into the courses, although you could add them on fairly easily. One major difference, however, is that Paradigm Accelerated courses are not written from a religious standpoint, although they promote good values and are more conservative than most other secular curriculums. One final general note: Paradigm's courses are designed to appeal to all students, even those who may not be interested in science. If your student already loves science and is looking towards a science-related major in college, they may need a more rigorous program.

The courses are made up of text booklets, activity booklets, and a teacher's resource kit. (For some courses, the text portion is available on CD-ROM in .pdf format.) All of the instruction to the student is found in the text. Text booklets each represent a chapter of the course and typically contain three sections, each of which is split into five lessons, or 15 lessons per chapter. Each lesson is between three and four pages in length, and they are usually focused on a specific topic. Definitions of introduced vocabulary used in the lesson and black-and-white illustrations and diagrams further augment each lesson. Lessons always end with a Life Principle, which is usually a thought-provoking quote from a notable individual that relates in some way to the lesson. After the lesson has been read, the student can complete the corresponding activity pages which are typically made up of short-answer, multiple-choice, true/false, and "list" questions that reinforce the lesson. Students are also asked to write the Life Principle for the lesson. There are about 15-25 questions for each lesson which is a fair amount, considering the length of the lesson itself. After five lessons and lesson activities have been completed, there is a review quiz. Quizzes include approximately 50 questions, mostly short answer and multiple-choice. Chapter tests are taken after a whole chapter has been studied and are about 50 questions in length. Quizzes and chapter tests are found in the Teacher's Resource Packet, which also includes complete answer keys and forms for teacher use. Please note that no answers are found in the student materials. Teacher's Resource Kits are available as a CD-ROM with .pdf files or as a loose-leaf paper copy with the CD-ROM. The content is identical between the CD and the paper copy but there may be times when one form or the other is more convenient. (Please note the publisher is transitioning from CD-ROMS to digital downloads.) - Jess

I need a course for my nephew for the year. I looked at other physics courses but they were too advanced. I saw this as a way to bring him physics AND introduce him to chemistry, too. It is unlikely that he will become a scientist ( I am a mathematician) so a course with good information and a little less rigor is well suited to him.

We did their biology course one year and I thought it contained great information that made it interesting, covered the appropriate topics without going into the depth that only biology majors could appreciate. I hope their chemistry follows the same model!

I needed something of slightly more interest to my high schooler. It's her first year being homeschooled so we are trying to find something that motivates her and is engaging.

This curriculum was well reviewed by Cathy Duffy for struggling learners and those with more difficulty in math in some chemistry and physics courses. I also currently use the World History Paradigm Accelerated Curriculum course for my 9th grader and he is doing very well with that curriculum.

"I have used Paradigm Accelerated Curriculum in the past and have been very pleased with the thoroughness and organization of the material, especially for a self-directed student."

In looking for a high school science curriculum, I needed to find a course that would be compatible with a struggling math student who enjoys history and stories much more than blunt scientific information. This course seemed to be a near perfect match.

This is the 3rd year we have used the Integrated programs. My son is a struggling learner and has really enjoyed this program. I like the fact that it doesn't require time to prep. The price is great and we don't have to spend a ton of extra on experiments that the kids never do. I would recommend this for those who want a science program where the kids have no plans on expanding their science experience in college.

Can someone please tell me what the recommended labs are? I purchased the curriculum and lost the slip of paper that had the recommendation. Any recommendations would be appreciated. Thank you!
Ariana C on May 22, 2023
BEST ANSWER: Ariana, I brought in a kit from the warehouse to find this paper. It shows nothing about suggested labs. One options would be Experiences In Chemistry, link below.

If I teach this to two students at a time, what materials would the second student need?
A shopper on Feb 27, 2023
BEST ANSWER: Depends on how you're teaching it. The course is comprised of a text portion that the student reads and then the activity/workbook that the student fills in. The quizzes and tests are in the teachers resource kit. If your doing everything orally just the one set is sufficient. If not, you're students will need to share the reading text and you will need to have an extra set of activity/workbooks and quizes/tests.
Is there a Teacher's Guide included with the Integrated Physics and Chemistry Full Course Kit?
A shopper on Jan 31, 2019
BEST ANSWER: Yes, included in the full set (when I purchased it) was a Teacher's resource kit with quizzes, chapter tests, and answer keys to everything.
Can this be used in one year, or does it need to be covered over two years?
User on Jan 5, 2019
BEST ANSWER: My daughter did this course in one year. She was in charge of her own schedule and checked her own work. I just graded her quizzes. This was one of her self directed courses and she liked it. I had her do some experiments and bought a kit for her to build a motor to supplement it. If you want something that your student can complete independently I highly recommend this course. We also completed world history and liked it too.
Is this linked to Next Gen. Science standards?
A shopper on Aug 23, 2018
BEST ANSWER: No, this course is not linked to the Next Gen standards. It was published in 2005 - some years before the Next Gen standards were established.
Does this inlude the labs or do they need to be purchases seperatly?
A shopper on Jun 11, 2017
BEST ANSWER: This course is strictly readings with activity books which review the readings. I suggest combining this curriculum with the DVD curricula Chemistry 101 and Physics 101. For labs, purchase a kit that is a self-contained curriculum and have your student write summaries of each lab activity.

I purchased this for my high school student who does not enjoy science but needed an additional high school science credit. We concluded that this product is fine, but not adequate for a student who loves science.

Even though my daughter is in 11th grade and still completing Algebra 1 I really wanted her to study chemistry--even knowing that it can be math heavy When I heard about this program I knew it was what we needed It is expensive but it is wonderful! My daughter is learning basic chemistry principles and enjoying it I love Paradigm Accelerated Curriculum products because they really walk a student through concepts and topics thoroughly---without the student feeling like they are being talked down to or using a curriculum for 'struggling students' There is basically ZERO teacher prep necessary as this is a self-teaching curriculum I just grade the work daily and discuss how to find the correct answers I highly recommend this product for any student---but most especially for those struggling with math but who still want to study chemistry!
