Category Description for Progeny Press Study Guides & Books:

The best way to describe these wonderful books is “literature and Bible study rolled into one.” Truly from a Christian perspective, these classic and award-winning books are examined in the light of God’s Word and a Biblical worldview. The author sent us several review copies and they are wonderful!

Each guide includes:

  • a concise synopsis of the book
  • information about the book’s author
  • background information pertinent to the story
  • suggestions for activities relating to the subject matter
  • introduction of literary terms
  • vocabulary exercises for each section of reading
  • comprehension, analysis, and application questions for each section of reading with discussion of related Biblical themes
  • a complete answer key and suggestions for further reading

Their brochure states “Our goal is to teach students of all ages to examine what they read, Christian or secular, classic or contemporary, and value the truth it contains as measured against the Bible.” A worthy goal indeed! If you want to study great literature from a Christian perspective, here’s your answer! If in doubt, try just one - we’re sure you’ll be back for more!

Progeny Press guides are available in two formats: softcover staplebound booklets and CD-ROMs. The CD-ROMs originally featured printable .pdf files, but Progeny Press is now transitioning these to interactive .pdf files. Inspired by a tax software, these files are able to be used by the student on the computer, or printed out. Questions in the files have text boxes to type in or buttons to select, so you won’t have to print worksheet pages if you don’t want to. Plus, users can grade their answers and leave notes as well! Upper Elementary through High School CD guides are now interactive, while Lower elementary titles are remaining the same, printable but not interactive. All books to accompany study guides are available from us for your convenience.

Please note that a brief synopsis of many of the books included here are provided in our Library Builders section. Study guides for the same book are often available from several publishers, so we found it more efficient to give a description of the book only once.

I have twin boys and they are both doing the Total Language Plus reader guide for My Side the Mountain. I have one book but it will be easier for them to each have their own book. Plus, they LOVE this book and might want to each keep their own copy forever!

I love this book and so do my children! I remember reading this book back when I was 11 After reading it I was ready to run off and live in the woods myself Now re-reading it with my own children I see that same look in their eyes that I had back then You can see their own wheels turning dreaming of what it would be like to survive in the wilderness all on their own After reading this book they began building their own woodland retreats gathering materials and planning out how they could make it through a winter What learning opportunities this book brought forth! The possibilities are endless on things you can do with this bookIn this story a young boy named Sam sets off into the Catskill mountains to attempt to make it on his own in the wilderness Through trial and tribulation he makes it through a winter managing to find shelter and food He learns as he goes along and not only survives through the seasons but thrives This fictional story provides a great source of naturalistic learning and survival skills It teaches not only about nature but also to respect nature to be part of nature yourself What an inspirational book It captures the wonder of nature that children naturally have and focuses on a child's desire for independence and adventure Jean Craighead George speaks to the explorer in all of us young and old

My 11 year old son who is a very reluctant reader (would much rather play video games) breezed through this book and the two sequels I used it as part of his school reading because it was recommended by Sonlight and he has a penchant for birds
