Publisher Description:

You can't breathe underwater, but a fish can. You can't eat underwater, but a fish does it every day. Named a Best Children's Science Book of the Year by Science Books & Films, this Level 1 Let's-Read-and-Find-Out picture book explains how a fish's body is perfectly designed for life in water.

Now rebranded with a new cover look, this classic picture book features graceful text that invites young readers to imagine what it's like to have gills, fins, and scales. Simple, fun diagrams help explain concepts like how fish use their gills to breathe underwater. This book also includes an additional activity for kids to set up their very own goldfish bowl.

Both text and artwork were vetted for accuracy by Dr. Valerie Chase, formerly of the National Aquarium in Baltimore, and Raymond Klinger and Ernest Tresselt of Huntington Creek Fisheries.

This is a Level 1 Let's-Read-and-Find-Out, which means the book explores introductory concepts perfect for children in the primary grades and supports the Common Core Learning Standards and Next Generation Science Standards. Let's-Read-and-Find-Out is the winner of the American Association for the Advancement of Science/Subaru Science Books & Films Prize for Outstanding Science Series.

These are favorites at our house! Mark is extremely science-oriented (and Janine seems to be following in his footsteps). He spends hours pouring over Visual Dictionaries and Wildlife Encyclopedias and watching Wonders of God's Creation and other science videos. He is really quite knowledgeable for his age. While it is no surprise that he liked these science books also, I was surprised that they were not too "simple" for him, with the availability of all those adult-level books. Much can be absorbed from these - they illustrate and explain advanced concepts at levels children can appreciate. The narrative is a blend of story and information and the illustrations (including visual aids such as colorful charts, maps and diagrams) are appealing and uncluttered. Each book introduces a science concept, then provides a step-by-step explanation within a clearly-written narrative. You may be able to find some of these at your library, but we decided that these were "keepers."

There is so much to learn from ancient cultures, and the best way to gain this knowledge is to examine the people and places of those times. This superb series highlights five high-interest cultures in these easy-to-read overviews packed full of interesting historical information. Learn about ancient Egyptians as you read about the Giza Pyramids, and discover why these pyramids are called the "Tomb of Wonders." Pompeii's excavations reveal to us many things we didn't know about ancient Rome's way of life. After reading about Machu Picchu, an ancient Inca village, you might want to travel to Peru to visit this "City in the Clouds." In the first emperor of China's tomb you will uncover his "Army of Stone" and many other amazing discoveries. Or you can just take the time to unlock the secrets of the dead by looking at natural and man-made mummies from around the world. Each book is paperback, has forty-eight pages, is filled with full-color photographs of the locations, and has a glossary of unfamiliar words and a list of books or websites for further research. Overall, these books provide wonderful insight to these famous historical sites, as well as providing wonderful information about the archeological proceedings, what they found, and what we've learned from those findings.
