Publisher Description:

This completely revised, full-color text develops better reading skills by reinforcing phonics principles through stories that pique young minds—stories about insects, spiders, birds, and other animals. Beginning vocabulary skills are also learned as students are exposed to new words (a glossary is located in the back of the reader). Simple review questions have been added to help with comprehension.

Note: This book is considered to be an advanced first grade reader and should be used at the tail end of a phonics-based first grade reading program.

Category Description for Christian Liberty Nature Readers:

Kids love to read about animals and nature, and Christian Liberty Press offers six readers chock-full of interesting stories and appealing illustrations. Book K introduces an animal for each of the 26 letters of the alphabet, and includes a story on each one of them. Book 1 focuses on Creation and reinforces phonics principles. Book 2 emphasizes small creatures and lessons from nature. Books 3 and 4 discuss the daily routine and other aspects of animal life. Book 5 has been completely rewritten and teaches about the earths hydrosphere and the multitude of creatures that live in the ocean. Review questions are provided at the end of each chapter or section. Answer keys are available for Books 1-5. These contain detailed answers to the review questions found in the student text.

Teach reading skills using this God-honoring program filled with enriching and interesting reading material. Throughout this series, students read children- and history-oriented stories. Grade K emphasizes phonics instruction (2 books of single-syllable, short vowel, words; 2 books use multi-syllable words, long-vowel sounds). Grade 1 reinforces and applies these phonics skills. Grade 2 assumes students have a good grasp of phonics, so the series then shifts to progressively more challenging vocabulary and reading and emphasizes reading comprehension. Grade 3 stories span a broad history, including ancient and Bible. Grades 4-5 emphasize American history readings. Grade 6 highlights abridged and revised selections from classic authors. Some levels require Teachers' Manuals, student activities, and tests.

Ordered for my second grader, who reads confidently. I like that it includes many different kinds of bugs. (It's easy to get readers on the more exciting zoo animals.)

This book is part of Heart of Dakota's "emerging reader pack" used in a couple of their guides (the same pack is used in both their "Beyond" and "Bigger" guides). As an aside, I just use the literature and read aloud books from HoD, not the whole program. They have a great book selection

my kids like nature and animals. I am looking forward to having a science component that they can potentially read on their own. I like that the lessons are short and that there are just a few questions after each lesson. nice and sweet.

I am going to try this Nature Reader with my First Grader to see if she enjoys learning about God's creation this way. These seem like very nice books with a lot of helpful information.

A desperate need in a world driven mostly by evolution to be able to hear creationism and science put together, enabling thinkers of our day. It is imperative for my children to pass on God's love, through His creation and to know how some details about Our God of order.

How different is the 2nd edition versus the new? I saw one review on book 5 and they were not impressed with the change. However, we never used the old version either? It’s needed for my curriculum as reader but I thought about buying all. Thanks!

BEST ANSWER: I have not seen the second edition of the nature readers. However, I do own the 3rd Edition of Book 1. We absolutely LOVE these nature readers. They are fascinating for my kids and I. The color illustrations are very nice. I will say, I read these aloud to my kids. I consider book 1 to be on a second grade reading level (like...at the end of the year). We also have the 2nd edition of the Kindergarten nature reader (Book K). In the introduction it claims that Kindergarteners should be able to read it with little assistance, but I disagree. I think it is a perfect reader for 1st graders. My daughter loves to read that one independently as a first grader. I hope that helps!
Are these hardback or paperback?
Amber on May 14, 2016
BEST ANSWER: They are soft cover. We have enjoyed them so far, I bought the whole set and am reading them through to my 6 year old a little at a time. They get "harder" as you go. The print gets smaller and has more info in book 5 vs. book K.

Highly Recommend!
This has been a perfect addition to our homeschool! I sit down with my 2nd grader, and she reads a chapter out loud almost daily. I am learning right alongside her! The illustrations are beautiful, and most importantly, it credits God as the author, creator, and ruler of all things. We will be ordering more of these books once we’re done with this one. Highly recommend!

Christian Liberty Nature Reader
I ordered the new Christian Liberty Nature Readers-with the colorful illustrations. These books were one of my children's favorites. Now that I teach homeschool classes, I love being able to use the ones with colorful pictures. They are a great asset to any homeschool library-and such a "gentle" way to learn with living books!

Completely delightful!
These are such a great find for my nature-loving boys. The information is factual, but told in a charming, story-telling way that really keeps my boys engaged. Book 1 is a great level for my 2nd grader, while the other books are being greatly enjoyed by my 4th grader. They enjoy these so much, they don't even realize they're practicing their reading skills! ;)

My daughter used this reader at the beginning of her first grade year and we enjoyed it very much! The book is full of interesting not commonly known facts about many different creatures that God has especially equipped to live in our world I really enjoyed reading about the spiders that shoot web into the air that forms a balloon for it to float! I appreciate that the author points back to God as the creator and designer of life!

I bought Book 1 for my first grader to save for later She is a good first grade reader and I thought this book was a little above her level when I paged through it My daughter saw the cover and immediately wanted to check it out To my surprise she started reading all about Mud Wasps and hasn't stopped She loves her Nature Reader I love it because the content is very informative for young ones I would compare it to Wag Tail by Alice Crew Gall by the way the story line goes and the ease of which the information is conveyed Also the font size is big enough the pictures are nicely placed and the "easy reader" size is small enough for little hands to hold

These nature readers are simply charming! I used them with my 13 yr old when he was younger and now my 7 yr old is working through them The stories are short and sweet and written in a way that engages children They are perfect for starting narrations with your child These books can also double as readers because they are written to the child at the appropriate level They are so easy to use since you just pick up and start where you left off the day before The cost is great and these are books you'll want to keep on your shelf for your grandchildren Most importantly of all they continuously give glory to God for the intricate details of His wondrous creation These books are the main science curriculum I use for my daughter supplementing with lots of good living books In my daughter's words "These books are handy and interesting and very cool"
