Product Description:

Want to avoid a heavy academic approach to language arts for the young student? This is the book for you! Packed with a year's worth of creative language activities, it is recommended for parents who chose to delay formal academics. The book is co-authored by Dr. Ruth Beechick, a strong supporter of age-appropriate learning methods. Rather than relying heavily upon workbooks, the book suggests ideas that encourage the student to explore language orally. Turn everyday events into valuable learning experiences. One of our customers describes this book as "refreshing," "enjoyable" and "a real bargain."

The reviewers who caution about some of the stories being violent are right! My husband and I do not try to overly shelter our kids either We want them to be exposed to real-world difficulties and such But some of the stories in this book--we just cannot understand why they unnecessarily put EXTREME violence in them We asked several other un-biased family members who agree They are not appropriate for anyone to read (especially kindergartners!) unless reading extremely critically as it takes violence unbelievably lightly I don't normally do this but I will be contacting Sonlight kindly asking them to rephrase some stories in future printings Excerpts of most violent passages: "Foxy Woxy snapped off Turkey Lurkey's head and threw his body into the corner Then Goosey Poosey went in and--snap!--off came her head Then Ducky Duddles waddled through the hole and--snap!--off came her head" (from Henny Penny) "She went a little farther and she met a rope So she said 'Rope rope hang butcher Butcher won't kill ox Ox won't drink water; water won't quench fire; fire won't burn stick; stick won't beat dog; dog won't bite pigAs soon as the cat had lapped up the milk the cat began to kill the rat; the rat began to gnaw the rope; the rope began to hang the butcher; the butcher began to kill the ox; the ox began to drink the water; the water began to quench the fire; the fire began to burn the stick; the stick began to beat the dog; the dog began to bite the pig; the pig in a fright jumped over the stile; and so the old oman got home that night"[That's how the story ends--nothing bad happens to the woman who was telling everyone to do evil] (from The Old Woman and the Pig)"Goldilocksran to the window and jumped out She didn't break her neck in the fall and she ran and ran all the way home" (from The Three Bears)I cannot understand why those violent details need to be placed in a Kindergarten Level LA book We will be skipping those three out the six stories; Half of the stories contain unnecessary violence

At first I was skeptical about the efficacy of this book The projects and ideas in it seemed too rudimentary too boring But I was looking at it through the eyes of an adult with life's experiences already under my belt So we faithfully walked through the book following Ruth Beechick's advice of slowly covering the basics of child development including reasoning counting thinking logically etc What I take for granted as an adult my children see as a fun way to learn! This workbook is easy to follow as a teacher requires virtually no planning ahead and the results? Incredible Your children will love these projects and you'll be impressed with their "Language and Thinking" skills by the end of the school year

I can not sing the praises of this curriculum enough! We have utilized it in our homeschool for the past year and our child loves it!Language and Thinking for Young Children was written by Dr Ruth Beechick as a complete year's course in oral language for young children The curriculum is divided into eight units: vocabulary/thinking skills language games memorizing learning about telephones enjoying poetry manners and learning on trips The lessons are easy to follow with instructions being brief and clear The lessons are easily adaptable to fit different situations and they are FUN to do!This is a great curriculum to use along with "Peak With Books"
