Product Description:

Noah Webster, a master of the English language, wrote a phonics program called the Blue-Backed Speller. Christian Liberty now provides us with an updated version of the book that was a standard for reading instruction in years past. Concepts are presented in a logical progression, starting with short vowels, then a combination of consonant, short-vowel sounds, then practice words and sentences. Phonics rules are provided throughout, and there are a few teacher helps in the back of the book.

I wanted the Daily Reading Intensive book but it was too expensive, so I decided on this instead based on good reviews from others. I am teaching reluctant older readers so I want something quick and easy to quickly go through phonics without a lot of busy work.

I have used this book before to teach a 5 year-old to read and he learned really fast. It's brief but thorough which makes it very user friendly from my perspective. Learning times can be short, say 10 minutes, which is good for younger kids.

There's a lot I love about IEW's Primary Arts of Language Reading program, but it is weak in the practice of blending sounds together. I bought this book to add in that element of reading instruction.

Back to Basics
I’m using this to teach my twin 5 yr olds to read. So far, so good. They enjoy the pictures...I enjoy knowing they are learning to read from a tried and true method. I taught my older 2 to read with Abeka; it was good. I am trying Noah Webster to save money while still teaching the important basics.

It's thin It's easy to use It's solid It's inexpensive My son tolerates it I love it It's Noah Webster's Reading Handbook This is a wonderful book to use to teach your child to read give them a jump start work on some gaps or review things they learned elsewhere The fact that it's thin is important When your child looks at a large volume of 300 pages 12x8 or bigger sometimes he or she can get discouraged This small 5x7 handy tome is just the right size
