Product Description:

There are 26 chapters and 7 review tests (each covering 2-4 chapters.) Each chapter begins with a little history about the composer, location and the world around them. Then you learn the musical concept and listen to tracks (either on the CD or from the teacher playing the piece shown in the book). You will learn about the piece you are studying and some history of the musical era. A "Facts to Remember" at the end of each lesson is helpful for studying, and then you listen to the pieces again. Each review test has a listening portion. A music teacher can play these, while others may use the audio CD. You really only need the beginning of the piece for the review tests. Tests (and answers) are in the back and are not reproducible. The answer key pages easily remove to keep as the instructor.

Publisher Description:

Western classicalmusicis as orderly and logical as mathematics, and yet capable of expressing and connecting with the whole range of human emotions. It consists most often of only twelve notes, a few simple rhythms, and a variety of aural textures that manifest in thousands of complex and distinctive styles and forms. It follows a system of rules set in place long ago, but these rules are flexible enough that newmusicis always being created, building on what previous generations composed, ever expanding.

This course aims to deepen the student'sappreciationofmusicby grounding the greatest pieces in the canon of Western classicalmusicin their historical context, and by introducing the foundational musical concepts of notation, rhythm, pitch, form, and melody to give a fuller understanding of the inner workings of the pieces and ofmusicin general. Students will listen to each piece ofmusicand then read each chapter and listen to the corresponding tracks on the Audio Companion CD, which will demonstrate the concepts discussed. The pieces are ordered mostly chronologically in order to illustrate the place each one holds in history and in the evolution ofmusic.

I really wanted to add composers and study of music into our homeschooling but not be overwhelmed. I saw a good youtube review and wanted to add this to our homeschooling.

I've been wanting a chronological study of classical music, and this one looks like just what I've been trying to find. Not just exposure to the various instruments and styles, but one that takes you through in historical order.

It looked simple enough for a music newbie to understand.

We enjoy music as a family, but have not really studied music. This will be a course for my middle school-er. We may spread it over 2 years, but I like the look of the course, the organization of the material, which should make it easier for us to actually do this regularly. "Extras" like art and music are the first to slide at our house, so I'm looking forward to having something laid out for us.

The description states that it can be used to teach when you yourself don't have a strong background in music.

is there a teacher's companion book to this or are answers included in the book?
A shopper on Aug 13, 2023
BEST ANSWER: The tests and answer keys are included in the one book with the lessons. There is not a separate teacher's manual. The curricula came with 1 book and a CD. We made it part of our morning basket time. All 5 of my kids enjoyed it (K, 7th, 8th, 11th, &12th). We did not utilize the testing portion and just enjoyed going through the lessons together.
Does each student need a book? Are there things to write down (besides tests)?
A shopper on Sep 4, 2021
BEST ANSWER: No, unless you want to have tests for each student. The tests (and answer keys) are included in the back of the book, and it does not give permission to photocopy those. But there is no other place for writing anything in the book, so other than the tests you should be fine with sharing just one copy.
how many high school credits is this book?
A shopper on Dec 26, 2020
BEST ANSWER: Memoria Press recommends this for grade 3 and up. I have used it with elementary children. I do not think this would qualify as a high school credit unless it was significantly amplified. Memoria Press offers some other programs for high school music credits like Discovering Music and Early Sacred Music. I have used Early Sacred Music with my 8th/9th graders this year and it is definitely more fitted for a high school credit.
Is the companion cd included with the book??
A shopper on Apr 11, 2020
BEST ANSWER: No, it’s sold separately at this link. Also, I didn’t realize the companion CD would not have full music pieces on it. It does not have full pieces. It only has the demonstration clips of things in the lessons.

I like this so far. However one of my kids like it and my other kid does not. But I feel like I am learning to appreciate and coming to a better understanding of music pieces we covered so far. I like the history behind it.

Excellent Course,even for high school
Two of my children are currently working through this for their high school fine arts credit. It is VERY interesting! The history included makes the composer and music more relatable, which is more engaging for the student. There are tests about every 4 chapters, which are very thorough, yet manageable. Highly recommend this course!
