Category Description for Saxon Math:

Students like Saxon because they feel successful in math instead of overwhelmed.

The most popular homeschooling math program hands down! Highly recommended by both Mary Pride and Cathy Duffy, Saxon Math also wins our award for the "Most Requested Text." Saxon math is a "user-friendly" math program - even for Algebra, Trigonometry, Calculus and other usually difficult math topics. Learning is incremental and each new concept is continuously reviewed, so the learning has time to "sink in" instead of being forgotten when the next topic is presented. Higher scores on standardized tests and increased enrollments in upper-level math and science classes have resulted where Saxon has been used in public schools. Students like Saxon because they feel successful in math instead of overwhelmed. Because of the format, children are able to work more independently.

I really like the Saxon approach as it includes a lot of review, and quite a few applicable word problems. I am choosing the Algebra 1/2 because I think the 8/7 is a little too easy for my 7th grader...

Math that makes sense. I understand Algebra very well, and I couldn't make very much sense of the other curriculums I researched. Repetition, Review, and an incremental approach is exactly how I was taught, and I learned it well, so I will be using this with my son.
Michael S on Feb 9, 2018
This best matches the school curriculum my son has been in. He is enrolled at a fast paced charter school, but because of some scheduling issues I needed to do math at home. We have a friend in a similar situation and she highly recommended this text to keep our boys on track.

Is this 3rd edition in the homeschool set the same as the 3rd edition that is sold separately?
A shopper on Aug 11, 2021
BEST ANSWER: Yes, you can buy things separately or as a set. Its perfect if you need just the text to pass on to younger student or replace a damaged piece. Hope this helps.
What condition are these books in?
A shopper on Oct 28, 2020
BEST ANSWER: These are great books. They were brand new upon receiving them. They held up good for the entire school year and could be used by other kids.
With this ALGEBRA 1/2, I noticed You have to use the solution manual for the Problem Set, THEN go the actual student book for the answers to ONLY the ODD of the PRACTICE SET Questions. BUT WHERE ARE THE ANSWERS TO THE EVEN practice set problems?
A shopper on Sep 14, 2020
BEST ANSWER: Although the practice problems are worked out in the other Saxon course Solutions Manuals, this is not the case for Algebra 1/2. Evidently, even the Saxon expert at HMH is unsure why. He does note: "The process for completing each type of new problems is taught in the lesson but apparently the steps are not demonstrated in the practice problems."
Does it include the answer keys to the daily lessons?
A shopper on Aug 15, 2020
BEST ANSWER: Yes! Answers to daily lessons and tests.
what is the difference of half and one could i understand one if i didnt do half?

I heard my child could skip Saxon8/7 and take Algebra 1/2 instead. Is that acceptable?
Rebecca on Apr 12, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Yes, that is a very normal pathway through the Saxon math program. Saxon 8/7 should be done by students who need extra practice before moving on to pre-algrebra. But, if your student is moving through Saxon 7/6 smoothly and understands the concepts just fine, then move them on to Algrebra 1/2 in 7th grade (or after they're done with Saxon 7/6). If you want more info, "The Well-Trained Mind" by Susan Wise Bauer is a wonderful resource.
Does the child do all the math problems by writing in the book or does this program require copying down the questions and then writing them on a separate sheet of paper?
A shopper on Oct 28, 2017
BEST ANSWER: We used a separate notebook for writing down answers. There are reproducible facts practice and tests that the kids write on, but it's a textbook so no space to write answers and show work. (Different than Singapore Math)
Does the test packet in the Algebra 1/2 include chapter tests only, or is it like lower levels and includes daily multiplication/division/addition/subtraction facts tests?
A shopper on Mar 9, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Just the chapter tests. If you are interested in facts practice you may want to go with Saxon 8/7 which is very similar to Algebra 1/2 covering the same math concepts with more explaination and practice like the lower levels.
What is included in the kit?
A shopper on Dec 9, 2015
BEST ANSWER: There is a textbook, a booklet of tests and a solutions manual.
Is this edition changed to follow common core standards?
A shopper on Nov 21, 2015
BEST ANSWER: It isn't aligned to the new Common Core, but don't let that dissuade you from purchasing! Saxon covers all concepts in a spiral methodology, with more than enough examples and practice problems with solutions, to aide even students with learning difficulties. Saxon is very easy to teach because of the format. The practice sheets, mental math, practice problems with the teacher, and then the student problems, is an excellent approach for students to retain what they learn.

Returned this text. Too much spiraled review vs. Actual teaching of new content. They need to better balance new vs. old content. Still a fan of Saxon but not this offering.

Easy to Understand
Saxon Math does an awesome job explaining math concepts and breaking things down in a simple to understand way. It reminds me of how my college Algebra teacher, who was from China, taught. After years of struggling, I finally understood Algebra! That's how amazed I am with Saxon Math. Math is math, but everything depends on HOW it's explained. My 6th grader has a talent for math (let's not talk about Grammar, though). He's proficient in so many concepts which placed him in Algebra 1/2, but he was also missing a few important things the public school skipped over. He was able to pick up this book and fill in the gaps, because the explanations are easy for him to follow. I'm so thankful the beginning of this book repeated every concept he should have already learned, or I wouldn't have known to spend extra time teaching him long division and decimals. Now that he's mastered those, he's continued on with the book, and is doing great. I will continue to use Saxon Math with him and his 1st grade brother, because I am that impressed! Oh, and his dad's happy, cause it was created by an Army vet. He calls it "Manly Math".

I'm an overall fan of this curriculum. We just switched this year and I like it. I'm used to curriculum that has an answer key that matches the students paper with the answers written in. This is a bit confusing to grade.
