Category Description for Saxon K-3 Program:

The Teacher's Manual contains the actual lesson plans and information vital to the effective presentation of math concepts. The consumable Meeting Books are used during the teacher-student "meeting" in which concepts are introduced, demonstrated and practiced. If teaching more than one student at the same level, you will only need one meeting book. Consumable Student Workbooks are used in grades 1-3 only and contain student materials, flash cards and practice pages. The Math K Home Study Kit contains teacher edition and meeting book. Math 1, 2, and 3 kits contain teacher edition, meeting book, and a set of 2 workbooks. Manipulatives are a vital, integral part of the program; these are not included in the Home Study Kits, but are available through us also.

Category Description for Saxon Math:

Students like Saxon because they feel successful in math instead of overwhelmed.

The most popular homeschooling math program hands down! Highly recommended by both Mary Pride and Cathy Duffy, Saxon Math also wins our award for the "Most Requested Text." Saxon math is a "user-friendly" math program - even for Algebra, Trigonometry, Calculus and other usually difficult math topics. Learning is incremental and each new concept is continuously reviewed, so the learning has time to "sink in" instead of being forgotten when the next topic is presented. Higher scores on standardized tests and increased enrollments in upper-level math and science classes have resulted where Saxon has been used in public schools. Students like Saxon because they feel successful in math instead of overwhelmed. Because of the format, children are able to work more independently.

This will be my third grandson who is homeschooled by me to use Saxon math. As a retired teacher of 40 years, I am happy with the program. My oldest grandson has finished grade 9 in Algebra 1.
Christine H on Apr 23, 2022
i have a kindergartner that is ready for math. we have used Saxon for our 3 older kids and we have loved it. I usually only do every other problem (odds/evens alternating lessons) and they move through with great understanding and i can get through 2 books per year without extra work or struggle. the repetition does wonders for math. On the earlier books i only do front sides of work sheet and they still get the concepts with out struggle.

not a better math book for young students

One of my daughters has developmental disabilities. We have already done this curriculum once but I thought it might be good to go thru and do all the worksheets a second time as a very through review of concepts.

We only need to buy this kit every year for each new student, since the Teacher's edition is reusable and we don't write in the homeschool meeting book.

The Saxon Math program is easy to use and helps the students master the basics before moving on. We used this program with my older daughter, so now I am purchasing the consumable books to use with my younger daughter.

Am I able to order part 2of Saxon Math for 1st grade?
A shopper on Mar 6, 2022
BEST ANSWER: These are only available in the sets shown.
My daughter is 4.5 years old, going into pre-K but knows all of Part A assessment. She didn’t get any right in Part B. It says I should start her on Math 1. Would you recommend Math 1 or Math K? Thank you!!!
A shopper on Jul 20, 2020
BEST ANSWER: I LOVE Saxon Math, but did not like Math K and that seemed to be the consensus among our homeschool group. I tried Math K for a month and hated it! My kids used Math 1 instead and did great. It is a little writing heavy, but they caught on to that pretty well. Your daughter will do well with Math 1 and I think their assessment is spot on. The beauty of using your own curriculum is you can move at your own pace and are able to slow down (or speed up) if needed. Best wishes and God bless as you start your school year.
Does this come with all the master sheets?
A shopper on Aug 26, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Yes, the master sheets are part of the workbooks.
What is the difference between new Saxon elementary grade materials and older Saxon materials for the same grades?
A shopper on Apr 26, 2016
BEST ANSWER: I have used Saxon math for my children and now am using Saxon math to teach my grandchildren and the concept is the same. They are doing math the way I remember it possibly more updated verbiage in story problems. I think it is the best out there. My kids all did well in math and liked it
How many pages does this work book have?
Sharon N on Sep 30, 2015
BEST ANSWER: There are 130 lessons in the workbooks. Each lesson usually has 2 pages, one math timed test page and one double sided lesson page. That makes it around 260 pages.

These workbooks are great!
Although the paper is a bit thin so watch out for heavy pencil pushers in your classroom!
The Saxon Math curriculum for Kindergarten through 3rd grade is excellent. Every concept is introduced gradually and gently with hands on activities and manipulatives. The curriculum builds each new skill or concept on a previous one. We've used it with great success with our sons. The only drawback I see with this method is that it works best as a complete package. It is not one that can be jumped into midway unless the student is naturally mathematically minded.

Not everything you need!
I did not realize that this set didn't come with the morning meeting/calendar book. It had been a few years since using this (I homeschool different ages), and wasn't careful enough in my product search, I guess. So, just a warning to others: this does not fully replenish the disposable items you use with a child. In fact, we kept the fact cards from round one (they are reusable!) so would have preferred those to have been the morning meeting book, instead, for a better package from Saxon.

We started out the year using a different math curriculum. It was so open ended and made it very difficult for me to figure out the best approach to teaching. A month into it, I knew I needed something more structured. On a tight budget, I only purchased the saxon math 1 student workbooks. Things have been going very, very well. However, there are extra pages that I had no idea what to do with, because they had no instructions. A few months in and I felt like without the teacher's guide, we were missing too much. So half way through the year, I found an inexpensive used teacher's guide and see that we were missing out on so much that we could have been learning & practicing. Yes, you can teach with just the workbooks at this level, but there's many extra things (weather, pattern work, graphing, counting practice, etc...) that are being left out. Next year, I will be sure to buy the entire set right away. Don't make the same mistake I did, find a way to get everything at once!

I like that everything is scripted. I also like that you use manipulatives because it helps them understand the concepts better. Saxon is very thorough.

Fantastic Resource for my Special Needs son
My son is a Special Education student and math is particularly hard for him. I really like Saxon Math for him because ideas are taught and then continuously reinforced. Also, the focus on teaching math visually but without the distractions of brightly colored illustrations that so many kids workbooks have. The visuals in Saxon are part of the math problems. As part of the lesson the student might be asked to color something but that adds to the lesson but isn’t already there as a meaningless distraction.

Adequate.
Good work book pages. I didn’t realize you didn’t get the meeting book with this set, kind of unfortunate to have to purchase that separately.
