Product Description:

This particular composition book is used as a spelling notebook for Spell to Write and Read. Includes 50 wide-ruled sheets (3/8") and has a sturdy cardstock cover. Learning Logs are used as an ongoing record of spelling words and sentences.

Publisher Description:

We are delighted to announce a tailored replacement for the standard blank black composition notebook. The Learning Log is one of the most important pieces in the "Spell to Write and Read" approach. The students build their own "text book" for logging in what they are learning each year. Now we have made building the book for students 3rd grade and up more rewarding and less stressful. To build the reference pages, the teacher no longer has to give instructions for when to fold, title, or number pages.

The new log has space to cover all the concepts once captured in the stock blank notebooks. The now expanded reference section has 39 pages. It adds important concepts: 1) Spelling Rules: collection of ck, dge, and ff, ll, ss words. 2) Grammar: subject/object pronouns, subject/verb agreement (showing where verbs sometimes follow patterns similar to the plural rule). 3) Derivative Work: Greek and Latin numbers, plus Greek and Latin roots, prefixes, suffixes. 4) Vocabulary: heteronyms.

Category Description for Complete Programs - Phonics:

Programs in this section go beyond teaching children how to read, incorporating phonetic readers, spelling and writing as well. Arranged roughly by grade/age.

Category Description for SPELLING PAPER / TABLETS:

We always used steno notebooks for spelling when I was young, creating new columns when we'd get to the bottom of the page. This idea is better! Each package of paper contains 500 sheets of white, wide ruled paper, measuring 4" x 11"; perfect for your long spelling lists.

Category Description for Spell to Write and Read:

What do The Writing Road to Reading, and this program, Spell to Write & Read have in common? Both have similar (and potentially confusing) names. Both would be labeled intensive phonics. And Both would claim a teaching progression something like this: sounds of speech - building words - developing a spelling vocabulary - writing original sentences - and then reading follows. If that sounds a little backwards to you, remember that these programs have very devoted followers who claim great success using this methodology and Spell to Write and Read is one of Cathy Duffy's 100 Top Picks for Homeschooling Curriculum.

Spell to Write and Read by Wanda Sanseri is an updated replacement for a previous program (Teaching Reading at Home and School) and is designed exclusively to work with the W.I.S.E. Guide for Spelling, also by Mrs. Sanseri. While SWR and the WISE Guide are considered a reading and spelling program, they could also be used as a stand-alone spelling program for a child who is already reading. SWR functions as a step-by-step teacher's guide to accompany the specific word lists in the WISE Guide. Covering preparation, philosophy, preschool pointers, reading aloud, evaluating achievement levels, and teaching penmanship with phonograms, it also illustrates in scripted detail the spelling dictation process and the spelling rule Reference Pages with instructions and examples. These spelling rule Reference Pages are central to the entire teaching/learning system. Ideas for reading assignments, ways to improve comprehension skills and refine composition skills round out the teacher's tools. In summary, this is the overall master book of a product combination that works together to teach the first four to five years of language arts or to remediate students of any age. The other components include the WISE Guide, 70 Basic Phonogram Cards, Spelling Rule Cards, 70 Basic Phonograms CD, the Primary Learning Log, and the Black Learning Log (more details on these below).

The W.I.S.E. Guide for Spelling (W.I.S.E. stands for Words, Instruction, and Spelling Enrichments) includes a core spelling list that is an updated version of the well-known Ayres List - a foundational vocabulary of 2000 spelling words. Words are divided into manageable daily lessons with 2 pages of teaching ideas for each set of 20 words. Each lesson has preliminary warm-up drills, motivational comments for introducing the lesson, and reminders to teach specific Reference Pages from SWR. Sample sentences are given to illustrate each word. Selections come from the Bible, literature, quotes from famous people, or instructive comments. Each word is divided into syllables and marked for spelling rules. Suggested teacher dialogue is provided. Optional enrichment activities involve a wide variety of subjects - art, literature, composition, grammar, etymology, alphabetizing, analogies, oxymorons, and many more.

This program, like other intensive phonics programs, is exceedingly detailed and painstakingly comprehensive and thorough. The extreme attention to detail would detract for many, but for those who want to follow a thoroughly researched and carefully implemented approach, this may be for you. ~ Janice

I am really hoping this does the trick (SWR) since my kiddo is 3-4 grade levels behind in spelling. I like that it has CDs even though I am not fond of the "christian" but non-biblical quotations and sentences that the word is used in. Ugh how am I going to undo all that damage? But I digress ... I like how the spelling rule is paired with a word list and I hope this does the trick otherwise logic of english (which seems too juvenile at this point). PS I got the kit too.

Why are there 40 spaces per spelling list page in the black book? Are we supposed to have 2 spelling lists per page?
A shopper on Sep 16, 2019
BEST ANSWER: Yes, we do 2 spelling list per page and use this learning log for multiple years. The lines get smaller and become simply 1 line per line of text, verses the 3 line handwriting sheet is the first learning log. Also, it is nice at the beginning of the year to review spelling rule pages created earlier, rather than re-creating them every year. We keep collecting words like number words. homophones, complex homophones on the same pages over the years.

If you do Spell to Write & Read, Get the Learning Log!
If you are using the Spell to Write & Read curriculum it is worth your sanity to get the pre-formatted learning log. You need one for the teacher and one for the student (the teacher can reuse the same one from year to year).
This curriculum is very detailed and regimented, but once I got on top of how to use it, I love it. I have tried a different curriculum, but came quickly back to this one because this one teaches the kids (and me) how spelling works (I am only using the spelling portion) and gives me tools to deal with words that I do not already know. In addition to that, my kids have advanced amazingly in their spelling and are spelling way above grade level.

Thank you, Daddy!
When we had the option of using a $.99 blank composition notebook or the $12 formatted version shown here for the SWR program, I was unsure of whether or not it would be worth the money to buy the formatted one. Now, when we open the book to start a new page, the kids regularly yell, "Thank you, Daddy!" to my husband. The amount of work, time, and effort it takes to format the blank pages is quite overwhelming. We are thankful each day that my dear hubby works hard to provide these extras for us! Although the curriculum clearly details how to do it, it is well worth the money to not have to struggle with the ruler and pen and mistakes and precision it takes to format the blank pages by hand. I can't even imagine the tears that have been averted! Thank you for offering this product!
