Category Description for Horizons Curriculum:

Alpha Omega Horizons is a Bible-based, fast-paced, spiral approach to learning introduction, review, reinforcement. This works well for students who catch on quickly, with constant review that keeps concepts fresh. These are teacher-led courses with colorful student workbooks and thorough teacher manuals. This curriculum offers two courses at the preschool level Preschool for Three's and Horizons Preschool, something not offered in other AOP curriculum lines. These two levels lay a solid foundation for future elementary levels. Although not available for as many subject areas as LIFEPAC or SOS, Horizons is comprehensive in the subjects that are offered. Math is available for K-8, Phonics & Reading for K-3, Spelling & Vocabulary for 1-3, Penmanship for 1-5, Health for K-8, and Physical Education for PK-12.

Alpha Omega Horizons now offers complete curriculum sets for kindergarten through 3rd grade. At the kindergarten level, the set includes Horizons Health, Horizons Phonics & Reading, and Horizons Math. First through third grades sets include Horizons Math, Horizons Health, Horizons Phonics & Reading, Horizons Spelling & Vocabulary, and Horizons Penmanship. These sets include all of the required books for each subject both student and teacher.

Category Description for Alpha Omega Mathematics:
A complete, Christian math curriculum that emphasizes skill mastery. Each Complete Boxed Set contains ten LIFEPACs and a teacher guide. The only exception is the Grade K Boxed Set, which contains two student books and a teacher guide. Review and self-tests are built into the curriculum. LIFEPACs are thin, consumable student work texts. They are colorful in the elementary grades, but become less colorful as the grade level increases. Each set of ten LIFEPACs provides a year-long curriculum.

The spiral-bound teacher's guide contains a curriculum overview, teacher's notes, answer keys, and suggested guidelines (for scheduling, grading, study methods, etc). Daily lesson plans are not included. Teacher guides for grades K-1 provide more detailed teaching instruction than guides for grades 2-12. Why? Because the LIFEPAC curriculum facilitates the independent study approach. Starting in second grade, written instruction is included in each LIFEPAC so that the lessons are largely self-instructional. The teacher's responsibilities include introducing each LIFEPAC, setting a schedule, completing teacher checks, being available for student questions, administering and grading tests, and developing additional learning activities.

You might be wondering, "What's the difference between this curriculum and Horizons Math?" After all, both programs come from the same publisher and follow a similar scope and sequence up to the sixth grade. The main difference, in my opinion, is that Horizons is not self-instructional (written instruction is not included in workbooks). Another difference is that LIFEPACs offer standard practice problems whereas Horizons offers a greater variety of problems (mazes, coloring, decoding, etc) as well as standard drill, but LIFEPACs provide many more problems per workbook page. ~ Anh

Category Description for Horizons Math:

Admittedly, no math program will work for everyone - but I find few flaws in this motivating and well-laid out program. Although it may be more advanced for grade level than the "average" program, I don't consider that a negative. Because of the developmental approach to learning in this program, even a non-math type can easily succeed, while the "math whiz" will be challenged by the advanced topics introduced early. Concepts are introduced incrementally, then practiced, developed, and continually reviewed as other concepts are introduced. Pertinent Biblical concepts reinforce the math lessons, also. I found these to be interesting and appropriate to the material, not "forced" as mere add-ons. Horizons lays a solid foundation for numerical literacy with an early emphasis on hands-on, concept learning via manipulatives and one-on-one lessons. The program relies on few separately purchased manipulatives by utilizing common household items and including charts and number lines found in the teacher's handbooks. A useful table in the handbook shows the integration of manipulatives in lessons so you can tell at a glance just what you'll need. Analytical reasoning and mental acumen are stressed throughout the series, and memorization and drill are not neglected. The teacher handbook is the heart of the program, containing daily lesson plans that are easy to implement. Reduced student pages are a tremendous aid in planning and supply answers to the worktext exercises. Besides plans, the handbook contains an overview, materials list, activities, and supplemental worksheets (approx. one for each 4 lessons). Designed for homeschoolers, the activities, language, and lessons require no alteration. There are 160 lessons per level, each requiring approximately 20-30 minutes per day. Tests are given after every 10 lessons to assess retention of cumulative skills. While a good part of each lesson is oral (especially at the K level), the enticing, colorful student worksheets lay foundations for lessons and review concepts previously taught. There are two workbooks per grade level. Please note that the actual lesson is to be taught by you - there are only brief instructions on each page of the workbooks, which are not intended to be self- instructional. Boxed set contains teacher book and 2 student workbooks.Additional Student Worksheet Packets contain one photocopy of each reproducible master in the teacher book.

Decided to purchase Book 1 and Book 2 rather than the complete set from the teachers manual due to other's noting they didn't use the teacher's manual much for this age. This will be our first year with Horizons, but I like how colorful it is, and the spiral learning method will be a great fit for my child who gets easily bored and likes to have new concepts often.

Love the use of the number line for visual understanding of the placement of numbers, greater, less than and number sense in general. Not all math curricula do this.

My daughter does well with the approach of reviewing as you learn new skills. We definitely feel free to skip areas that we have mastered, as assignments can feel like busy work at times. Overall a good curriculum that we combine with another.

I had purchased the grade 1 book for my bright kindergarten girl, and she blew through the first part, but I didn't want to go on when she was needing some review, so I decided to purchase the same book so she can go through it again but will fly through until the more difficult portions come. My son has excelled in his grade 2 book, so we're purchasing the grade 3 for him.

I am trying to decide whether I should start with workbook 1 or 2 for my daughter, who has completed Primary (Singapore) Math 1A. I'm just not sure if I'll be skipping anything important if we start with Horizons Math 1 Workbook 2? Thank you for any insight!
A shopper on Nov 20, 2018
BEST ANSWER: We have a placement test for Horizons on our website that should help. You can find it at the link below (scroll down a bit). In general, the two courses should be fairly well matched although Singapore has a greater emphasis on problem solving skills. Your daughter will probably be OK starting with Workbook 2.

I used this with my now high schooler and middle schooler who are in upper level math classes, and we are happy to go through it with our first grader again expecting the same results. It is straight forward, challenging, and the spiral method of the curriculum keeps the student from losing gains.

We love this math program!
We have been using Horizons math for 1 month now and we love it. My daughter was using Math U See alpha and she grasped concepts quickly but Mastering each concept was harder and required a repetitiveness that bored her. Horizons moved quickly, constantly introducing new while consistently reviewing past concepts. She loves it and is learning better with this method.

Excellent program
I haven't found any other program to be as good, and believe me I've looked at several, and have worked through a couple of the other top programs out there. Nothing is as good as Horizons to me and my kids. I have a girl and a boy who process differently, but they both do well.

So far I love using Horizons Math for my son He likes that there are a variety of exercises each day and the colorful pages keep him interested I like the idea of being able to switch to other Alpha Omega systems and be on the same scope and sequence later if he needs a different method My only criticism so far would be that the K workbook has the student learn to write a four with the triangle shape and the 1st grade book jumps in with a square-shaped four

Horizons is one of the best math programs for K-6 That's what Cathy Duffy saidIt is very easy to use for the teacher and student it's colorful the student likes it Not too many problems (only 2 pages/lesson) However the TM is not much help It says to teach the clock but doesn't explain or give you an idea how Also Horizons is not strong in conceptual math That's why I recommend to supplement MEP math which is free or Singapore We do 2 pages Horizons and one page Singapore I only buy the workbooks for all including HorizonsFor manipulatives which I think are essential especially for K-3 I use -base ten blocks for place value (see if you can find hundreds tens and ones in different colors if not you can make them yourself with cardboard )-abacus (must have for pre algebra like 4 + what makes 10)-unifix cubes-clock -pattern blocks

We started Horizons 1 with our 5 & 6 year olds for first grade in 2008 They are now 6 & 7 and over 2/3 of the way through the curriculum Horizons was a good fit for our five year old who has a "gift" for math We did not buy any of the manipulatives although we have many ourselves Our 6/7 yo son struggles a little bit He still gets 95-100% on each worksheet & test but it's a little bit harder for him than his brother Horizons is more of a "picture - abstract" traditional way of teaching math It's colorful and we love the repetition For a child who "gets" math easily it's a wonderful enriching program I did not follow every teacher's instruction in the book until we were about half way through Then we started our flashcards and a lot of personal review on areas where the boys were struggling a little bit like time money place valueAll-in-all Horizons 1 is excellent and offered at a great price It does not take much prep time at all and for our family worked well with various ages and two different learning styles (auditory & kinesthetic) However we did supplement A LOT with Mailbox Magazine Math Mammoth etc in trouble spots Horizons does have extra work and drills that you can copy but I can't say that I found them overly helpful I think that if a child doesn't understand why he's doing something drills don't necessarily help When he gets to Algebra he'll be lostI would suggest Horizons for the child who will easily understand math concepts without a lot of explanation For a teacher the program is a breeze and the teacher guides are invaluable I did not find it necessary for our first graders to know how to skip count by 6s 8s 9s etc so we just ignored those ideas for practice My oldest son needed a LOT more explanation and practice of place values that are so important and not heavily stressed in this program There is lot of practice of looking at bars and units but sometimes you really need them in your hands to help you "get" it

I love Horizons Math! We are using level K for my kindergartner and my 1st grader is using level 1 I love the review and my older daughter really does well with it It is broken down into small sections which makes her feel more successful and not overwhelmed by large numbers of problems My younger daughter with a smaller attention span also does well with the small sections as it allows her to not linger on any one topic for too long We plan to continue on with Horizons next year as well I believe it is an excellent value for the quality of instruction received
