Category Description for Spellwell:

This series is a flexible spelling program, designed to practice words by spelling rule, but incorporating high-frequency sight words and additional words of your choice. This allows you to include content – area words from other subject areas or words your child has misspelled in writing. Another nice feature is the upgrading of the lesson if a child misses less than two words on the pretest. Words with the same phonetic or spelling rule, but at a higher reading level, are substituted for those on the original list. For example, if words like "tire," "hole," and "mistake" are no challenge, they are replaced by words like "telephone," "useful," and "earthquake." As you might guess, this lesson's rule is "Words with Silent e." An "outlaw" word for the lesson is "whole," since it doesn't conform to its sound. After the pretest, the student uses the words in the list in games and activities throughout the week. According to research referenced here, students more easily retain information that's practiced in regular, short intervals than for a longer time less frequently. Exercises appear varied, educational, and interesting, giving the students experience writing and working with the words before the post test. Cartoonish blackline illustrations liven the text and would be fun to color in as a reward for good work. Each level includes two student books (for example: A and AA) and will take approximately one schoolyear, although it is flexible to meet individual children’s needs. Teacher guides are optional, providing an answer key for the exercises. You should not need them at this level, but they are inexpensive and will help busy moms save time. There is one teacher guide for each level. Packages include both student books and the teacher guide/answer key for each level.

Have been using this spelling program consistently with my older two boys and it has been working well - integrates easily into our daily rhythms, they are able to work on it independently, and even though they are older they don't find it boring or childish. Starting with book A for another child this year.

These are excellent little spelling workbooks with a variety of activities to reinforce spelling.<br />They are also very affordable and a great value.

All About Spelling has been great in terms of reviewing phonics and rules, but it's become tedious and time-consuming and my daughter and I both dread it. I need to find something she can do more independently (which is preferred method anyway), something she can have fun with, and something she can complete in about 10 minutes a day every day (she really struggles with spelling and needs the daily interaction with it). This seems to fit all requirements.

I read several Cathy Duffy reviews with my son who is struggling with spelling, and after reading the review and looking through the sample pages on Rainbow Resources' website, this is the program that looked most appealing to both him and me.

Need a simple speller workbook and this one is recommended by Cathy Duffy. Since it's low cost it's worth a try. Hoping my boys like it : )

"I have heard great things about this program from other homeschooling families, and I'm excited to try it with my daughter this year."

2nd grader learns well and likes workbooks. She doesn't need Explode the code, but enjoyed the workbooks.

We have used Spellwell before with an older child. It is an easy spelling curriculum that allows my kids to work with the words and not simply just drill in the spelling order.

This did not work out well for my son. The lessons were a bit tedious and we just ended up skipping only to the test pages.

Did some research online and hoping our boys like this program better then what we are currently using, had really good reviews from others

Appears to be easy; to use and I have a busy, busy boy who likes to move around. Cathy Duffy recommended for wiggly willies.

Not loving this one
I agree with the other reviewer who said that the instructions are confusing. It is a bit weird and I'm surprised by that because this is the same author that does Explode the Code, which we love!! We're having more success teaching spelling by doing copywork from books they love.

Great concept, poor font choice
Format wise, it's pretty close to perfect for what my 6 year old wants and needs in spelling. She LIKES busy work stuff. And it gives her some independent work to do while I help other siblings. But I knocked it down by 2 stars because of two reasons. 1, some exercises have very confusing directions. And 2, the j's are printed as straight lines, without a curve at the bottom. I realize all fonts are different and a 3rd grader would understand those as J's.... But for a FIRST GRADER, which this book is written for, shouldn't they look like J's?!? I went thru the book and added curves to the bottom of all the "tall i's," as my 6 year old first thought they were...

Effective program
I used this program while home schooling my own children and now use it in my tutoring. The simple black and white layout allows students to focus on words with minimal distractions. Good choice of word lists and activities.

This is the one that fits my writing/spelling phobic daughter (we're using it as a remedial program) The lessons and lists are short The pages are black and white The activities are varied Each lesson has room for me (or her) to choose two extra words she's interested in learning Some lessons are very easy while some make her really think There is also a test score record sheet at the back of the book We love the fact that each level comes in 2 thin books--so much less threatening than a large book We've tried several spelling programs and experienced tears and failure--this one is working for us

This is the second spelling program we've tried The first had beautiful colored glossy pages and my daughter hated it We are loving Spellwell My daughter is 6 1/2 yrs old and a good reader who is handling Level A very well so far As parents we were not sure about the pressure of "tests" but she really likes the spelling test at the end of the week As a previous reviewer said it takes about 15 minutes per day What I really like is that instead of asking questions such as "which words have 2 vowels" or "which word rhymes with book" every week the exercises are typically fill in the blank unscrambling words and sentences and vocabulary related This means she is using these words in sentences and understanding their meanings So far my daughter is retaining the spelling knowledge and proud of her work
