Grade K emphasizes phonics instruction (2 books of single-syllable, short vowel, words; 2 books use multi-syllable words, long-vowel sounds). Grade 1 reinforces and applies these phonics skills. Grade 2 assumes students have a good grasp of phonics, so the series then shifts to progressively more challenging vocabulary and reading and emphasizes reading comprehension.
