This is for the younger set to work on number sense through a series of daily conversations, a vertical number line and a set of cards. The cards show a variety of number combinations from roman numerals, coins, tally marks, fingers, dominoes and regular addition problems. You need both the book and cards to use this method. The idea is to build an innate sense of number relationships rather than memorizing math facts. This is a good lead into several different math programs and is recommended by The Life of Fred math series in particular. Each daily session should last between 15 and 30 minutes. Using the cards, a child may be asked to find five versions of 8, make all the tens they can, as well as simpler addition and subtract tasks that reinforce the lesson. It’s important for the parent/teacher to embrace the approach. Kids are encouraged to take time to think, then answer the question. There are 11 chapters, each with several activities.
