Ten Frames Sets

Learning basic addition and subtraction can sometimes be a challenge. This manipulative set gives students visual models of numbers and number facts in relationship to the number ten. This set includes 4 yellow rectangles made of lightweight foam with 2 rows of 5 holes each and 40 pegs, and a teacher guide with activities for this set. The idea behind them is that students see a representation of numbers in the arrangement of the pegs. For example, I set up the board to show 6 pegs and 4 pegs. The holes are completely filled and I see that 4 + 6 = 10. The sets can be purchased with either two-color pegs (red/blue) or single-color pegs (blue). The two-color pegs offer differentiation and can be used for comparisons, sequencing, and the single-color pegs are good practice for addition and subtraction. The yellow boards are interlocking so you can use this method to work with larger numbers as well. The teacher guide offers suggestions for working on addition, subtraction, and comparisons, and I'm sure you could come up with more options. This set offers an alternative to counting when looking at larger numbers and hones mental math skills as children see the pattern at a glance and make the number connection.
