Category Description for Heritage Studies Grade 4 (4th Ed.)

BJU Heritage Studies presents American history from a biblical worldview as students learn about our nation’s history, as well as regions of our country and their unique culture and characteristics. Learning takes place through reading informational text with lots of illustrations, infographics, and maps, along with reading about highlights of important people and places, historical music and more. This updated edition has a revised scope and sequence to include an overview of the five regions and their environment, economy and culture. Various chapters have also been added or removed; therefore, this edition is not compatible with earlier editions. The homeschool kit includes a Student Textbook, Teacher Edition Part 1 & 2, Activities Book, Activities Book Answer Key, Assessments, and Assessments Answer Key.

The BJU Press Heritage Studies Student Textbook is colorful and engaging for young students. The first chapter gives a brief history of the United States, and the other ten chapters focus on the country’s regions with an emphasis on history, environment, economics, religion, culture, and citizenship. Special features offer interesting reading about historical music, historical literature, biographies, and landmarks. An atlas and glossary are included in the back.

Teacher Editions Parts 1 & 2 include instruction for teaching each lesson and how to correlate each lesson with the textbook and Activities book. Teacher editions also have a reduced copy of the student page with teacher notes wrapped around the student pages. Hands-on activities, age-appropriate biblical worldview discussion on the new content, suggestions for technology resources, and a four-step teaching cycle (engage, instruct, apply, and assess) have been added. Instructional aids, differentiated instruction, and chapter review are also included to help aid in retention and test preparation. BJU Press Trove is a digital resource for classroom teachers and not available to homeschoolers. However, Homeschool Hub is specifically for homeschool parents to access the digital resources to support the lessons.

A consumable companion to the student text is the Activities Manual. Providing activity pages for each lesson, students might complete true/false statements, sequencing events, fill in the blank using word banks, matching vocabulary words to their definitions, multiple choice questions, and more. Chapter and quiz reviews are included, and certain states are highlighted when studying the regions. The back of the book has 32 pages students can complete for their specific state report. Students do research about their state history, politics, environment, economy, culture, and more. The spiral-bound Activities Manual Answer Key includes all the pages in the activities book with answers in red.

Assessments include two or three quizzes and a test for each chapter. The Assessments Answer Key includes a copy of the quizzes and tests with answers in red.

Our United States history course is a thorough, engaging program for young students to learn the history of our nation in a biblical worldview context. ~ Gina
