Winner of our 6th Annual Summer Book Contest is a tale of adventure by 14 year old Rachel Johnston. Clover is a wee, white mouse. The story opens with Clover being chased through the forest by a band of rats. She escapes with help from a brown mouse and a white rat. What comes next is a combination of trickery, danger, loyalty and surprise. A mysterious necklace is the key that unlocks Clover's future. Rachel could be a professional illustrator! Her artwork with colored pencils is so detailed and expressive. Her characters are consistent and dimensional, and the settings add to the story. I have read this book several times and notice something new with each reading, a jewel on a crown or a shadow on a face, that makes me want to look at it again and again! It began as a simple idea, create a summer contest for young authors using a product we sell, a make-your-own book kit from Lulu Jr.. The owners loved the idea and offered cash prizes! We decided there should be three age groups between 7 and 18 and came up with a theme and some rules. Every author who writes a story receives their own beautifully constructed book directly from Lulu Jr.. Here in the RRC office, we read a digital version of every story provided by Lulu Jr. and several judges score the entries. It is quite a process for us to read all of the entries during back-to-school season!
The summer book contest has grown and we have covered a
variety of literary genres and themes. One overall winner is selected each year
and Rainbow sells their book. That is who you see represented here. Sales
generate a royalty stream for the author and they own all rights to their
material. We hope you enjoy the quality writing and illustrating demonstrated
