Publisher's Description of Learn to Read K Unit 1 MM (Hooked on Phonics)

Category Description for Hooked on Phonics: Learn to Read

Hooked on Phonics: Learn to Read is an engaging and easy-to-use phonics program that teaches children how to read in as little as 15 minutes per day. Lessons are consistent in format throughout the program, where kids will first watch a DVD video lesson and complete a variety of fun workbook activities. After practicing the sound combinations and words in the lessons, students then pull everything together by reading a story. When each lesson is finished, celebrate your child’s progress with reward stickers!

Preschoolers (Early Emergent Readers Levels 1 & 2) will develop pre-reading skills through songs and hands-on workbook activities. Topics covered include the alphabet, recognizing uppercase and lowercase, tracing letter shapes, learning rhyming words, and identifying letter names and sounds.

Kindergarteners (Emergent Readers Levels 3 & 4) will review and then build on the foundational reading skills introduced at the preschool levels. Topics covered include short vowels, CVC words, compound words, and adding “-s” to nouns and verbs. Sight words are also introduced and children will begin to read short stories.

First grade (Transitional Readers Levels 5 & 6) reviews what was learned in the kindergarten levels, covers more difficult letter combinations, and introduces more challenging stories. Beginning and ending consonant blends are emphasized, as well as suffixes, two-syllable words, and 36 new sight words.

Second graders (Early Fluent Readers Levels 7 & 8) will enter the final stage of the program where they will be able to read all by themselves. At these levels, vowel teams, complex consonant blends, diphthongs, two-syllable words, r-controlled words, and other more advanced concepts are covered. New two-syllable words and sight words are also introduced.

Each Kit includes 2 DVDs, 2 workbooks, 6-12 storybooks, sticker packs, and online access to interactive videos, games, and activities for that grade.

Learn, practice, read, and celebrate as your child develops a strong foundation in phonics and reading skills with the Hooked on Phonics: Learn to Read program!
