While
heroic, the story of Harriet Tubman’s childhood and life are something a
sensitive reader would likely find shocking. This version is very engaging to
read; the story is gripping and horrible and hopeful. Sigh. But I just couldn’t
stop from thinking about a 3rd grader reading this and being
horrified by the events. I would put this more at the middle grades due to the
content, not the reading level. The print is nice and large and there are a few
illustrations to break up the text. Perhaps an older student who struggles with
reading would be the best audience for Harriet’s story. ~Sara
