Semester 2 Overview:
Each semester weaves the 7 main subjects into themed units spanning a variety of interests. Semester 2 units include magnets, Midwest states, World War II, oceans, Southwest states, and a “Wrap It Up" section to demonstrate skills learned over the year. The following non-exhaustive list gives a taste of concepts taught in each major subject. Language arts goals are divided by specific skills: reading (story components, character analysis, intro to research, etc.); spelling through oral written and tactile practice; grammar through diagramming; identifying and writing different types of sentences; identifying and using figurative language techniques; and varied format (from writing paragraphs to comic strips, as well as a travel brochure and bibliography). Oral and listening skills are honed, adding keyboarding skills. In math skills, students review whole numbers and are introduced to algebraic thinking (including operations); beginning geometry skills; measuring and estimation; mathematical logic; comparative money skills; fractions; probability; and simple graphing. Social studies cover topics such as US geography, WWII, the Oklahoma City bombings, and understanding cultures and community. Science studies scientists and scientific theory, insects, the human body, life cycles, Newton's laws, and weather. In physical development, students continue developing small and large motor skills by applying them to physical activities and developing cardiovascular endurance. Fine arts instruction presents details regarding music and drawing techniques, with information about how to gain an appreciation of art from various cultures. Finally, in Character Development/Bible, students practice helping others and proper social interaction. Students also learn how best to communicate the Christian faith and analyze biblical stories and character traits. ~ Ruth
