Semester 1 Overview
Each semester weaves 7 main subjects into 6 themed units spanning a variety of interests. Semester 1 units focus on topics such as farming, poetry, body systems, magnets, Great Lakes states, and invertebrates. The following non-exhaustive list gives a taste of the skills that are covered. Language arts goals include writing skills such as cause and effect, genres, fiction vs nonfiction, points of view, dictionary use and early research skills; spelling (syllables, prefixes and suffixes, and alphabetical order). For grammar, learn to diagram sentences, write paragraphs, use graphic organizers, recognize figurative language, and write simple poetry. Listening and speaking skills are also practiced. In math, students identify whole numbers and sets; recognize and apply beginning algebraic thinking; identify geometric shapes and patterns; estimate and measure; make predictions and evaluate solutions; practice using money; and learn fractions (with converting, multiplying, and dividing). In science, students study invertebrates; body systems; insects and the life cycle; classification; weather; sonar; and Rube Goldberg machines. For physical development, students will improve large and fine motor skills through activities. In fine arts, students learn music notations and also art skills like perspective, symmetry, and pointillism, and will make models and pottery. Character development/Bible, which is sometimes integrated with language arts, teaches topics like character qualities, major Christian holidays, memorizing and applying Scripture, and developing a strong work ethic. ~ Ruth
