As expected, this expansion extends the player count to six. However, there is much more in this box to make it worth adding to your collection even if you never play with that many people. Included in this expansion are the following:
For the 5-6 player expansion: 40 dice, 2 window frame player boards, 12 flavor tokens, 2 score markers, and 6 window pattern cards
Other components: 1 dice tray, 6 private objective cards, 6 private dice pool boards, and 2 tool cards
The dice tray is cute but, in my opinion, it was not easy to put together without something tearing or breaking and did not fit well into the box afterwards. I used my own dice tray to roll dice into.
The new private objective cards add variety for scoring because they present different patterns of dice that can be cumulatively scored based on the sum of the dice values in each arrangement. These cards can be used exclusively or mixed in with the Sagrada base game cards.
In playing with this expansion, I found that besides the new private objectives, the most significant changes/opportunities for varied play and challenge were the new dice bag setup and private dice pool use and rules. If you use the standard dice bag setup, instead of putting all the dice in the draft bag, an even number of dice per color is used based on player count. For example, if it is a three-player game, 14 dice of each color are used (70 total dice).
Using the private dice pool rules was the most interesting part of this expansion for me. The dice draft bag is set up based on player count with fewer dice per player. For example, in a three-player game, there are 8 dice of each color placed into the bag (40 total dice). Then, each player takes two dice of each color, rolls them, and places them on their private dice pool boards. Regarding gameplay, the big change is that players only get one turn each round, during which they can draft one die from their private board and one from the dice bag draft, which will be a number based on player count. The two new tool cards are only used with the private dice pool boards.
I highly recommend using the private dice pool for this expansion along with new private objectives and mixing in one of the new tool cards. The strategy changed for me because I already knew half of the dice that I had to work with for the game as revealed on my private board. For 1-6 players with 30–45-minute game time. - Marsha
