Description

Seizing Rome in 20 minutes was not something that Caesar hoped to do but when you play this strategic area control game for one to two players, you just might achieve what he could not! In the role of either Caesar or Pompey, opponents vie for control of Rome to win this game and achieve fame and glory….

Components and Gameplay:

  1. Game Board – Depicting the Provinces of the late Roman Empire and its close territories, there is one space inside each area occupied by a bonus token. All provinces have different symbols on border spaces that touch two provinces. Players take turns placing influence tokens on these border spaces with the goal of gaining control of as many provinces as possible in order to use all their control tokens.
  2. Influence Tokens – Each player has a different color group of influence tokens (Red for Caesar and Blue for Pompey) that have a different number on each side as well as a symbol that matches with those on province border spaces on the map board. There is also a wild “laurel” icon that may be placed on any border space. Players start with two available tokens and the rest are placed in a draw bag. Considering their two numbers and symbols, one token is chosen each turn to play on a matching border symbol between two different provinces. The player must strategically decide which number to face towards each province’s border to determine which territory to exert the most influence in order to take control. Once their turn is complete, a new influence token is drawn and made available for their next turn.
  3. Bonus Tokens – The player that positions the last open influence token space on any territory gains the bonus token inside of it. There are four different types of bonuses that offer varying rewards. Examples are a free turn or the ability to increase available influence tokens to three each turn instead of two. There is also a sword token that allows a player to flip any of their opponent’s influence tokens on the main board to negate its value and a senate token that is placed on that player’s area of the main board along with control tokens each time a player obtains a new senate token and takes control of a province or territory.
  4. Control Tokens - Once the bonus token is claimed, the point values of all bordering influence tokens determine whether Caesar or Pompey has exerted the most control. The winning faction claims the territory by placing a control token in their matching color on the space previously occupied by the bonus token. That province is now closed. Players controlling adjacent provinces also place a control marker on that border.
  5. Game End: The game ends when a player uses their last control token to win the game or when either player cannot place a matching influence token on the game board and loses the game.

With two expansion modules and solo rules included, this game packs a tremendous amount of opportunity for a unique strategic experience in just 20 minutes!
