Description

This detailed and easy-to-use Readiness & Writing Teacher’s Guide from Handwriting Without Tears® provides step-by-step directions for laying a firm foundation in beginning writing skills. You’ll find a plethora of helps to guide your students from prewriting skills starting with crayon use to pictures, colors, and shapes. The first 4 sections provide teacher support and teaching method explanations and walk you through teaching crayon grip, building shapes, reviewing colors, and other prewriting skills. Students will then begin with capital letters (ordered by shape) and then move to counting and numbers.

This guide provides easy-to-use and detailed teacher instructions for using the My First School Book and My First Lowercase Book. Monitor your student’s progress with the provided benchmarks in foundation skills, readiness and writing skills, language and literacy skills, numbers/math skills, sensory motor skills, and interpersonal skills.

You’ll have the tools you need to guide your child step-by-step from prewriting skills (such as following patterns, making strokes, or drawing inside shapes) to beginning handwriting instruction. Beginning with foundational skills, including shapes and colors, it then progresses to writing capital letters. The year ends with six weeks of lowercase using the My First Lowercase Book (not available separately). All concepts are taught and reinforced using multisensory activities, manipulatives, drawing skills, and more. For each lesson, the Teacher’s Guide shows a reduced student’s page and provides a teacher oral script, a learning activity, vocabulary words, a list of skills your student is learning, and more. Once you understand this program’s unique methodology, the daily lessons are low-prep, but do require high teacher/student interaction—made straightforward with the Teacher’s Guide. Add the Hands-On Learning Pack with My First Book Set for one student. Depending on your student’s needs or learning styles, you may want to add other manipulatives suggested in this guide. For each additional student, you’ll need the My First Book consumable set.

Note: Throughout this guide, references are made to the Get Set for School Sing Along songs being available in the “Interactive Digital Teaching Tool” (IDTT). This digital tool is designed for school districts’ large classroom purposes (available directly from Learning Without Tears). For individual students and homeschool use, this guide, used along with the Hands-On Learning Pack, provides all the instruction and helps you’ll need. The Get Set for School music is still available as a separate CD or for free on YouTube®. For PK use, this curriculum also suggests Roll-a-Dough Letters and Stamp and See Screen. Spiral-bound, 254 pgs, sc. ~ Ruth

Publisher's Description of Readiness and Writing Pre-K Teacher's Guide (2026 Edition)
The Readiness & Writing Pre-K Teacher’s Guide offers scaffolded, multisensory instruction to build kindergarten readiness with ease.

This user-friendly guide equips teachers with a variety of activities that can be practiced during lessons or integrated throughout the day, ensuring flexibility and consistency in instruction.

Each carefully designed lesson includes a clear, easy-to-follow format to support successful implementation. For younger learners, there are plenty of activities to build alphabet and number knowledge.

When children are ready to learn how to write letters and numbers, the explicit teaching language and detailed instructions align seamlessly with the activities in My First School Book and My First Lowercase Book (part of the My First Book Set), providing everything you need to deliver engaging and effective lessons.

My First School Book

Designed to build kindergarten readiness and pre-writing skills, this engaging activity book features lessons on colors, numbers, and shapes to strengthen crayon grip and fine motor skills. It introduces capital letter formation with developmentally appropriate pre-stroke pages, making learning accessible and confidence-boosting for young learners. Thoughtfully designed activities and child-friendly letter formation language foster a love for learning and support developmental growth.

My First Lowercase Book

This book helps children explore lowercase letters and develop pencil skills through fun, hands-on activities. It introduces concepts like size and placement of lowercase letters on double lines while incorporating hand activities for better coordination. Learners are also introduced to concepts of print, complete sentences, and basic sentence features, preparing them for the next stage of literacy. Empower your teaching and foster early learning with the Readiness & Writing Pre-K Teacher’s Guide!

This Get Set for School® Readiness & Writing Program by Handwriting Without Tears® prepares and guides your students from prewriting skills to capital and lowercase letters in one year. Your student is ready to use this program if they are consistently using a dominant hand and correctly holding a crayon; can understand shape concepts like big/little line and big/little curve; and can draw vertical and horizontal lines, a plus sign, and a circle. This level takes the students sequentially through 2 consumable student books: My First School Book and then My First Lowercase Book. Additional copies of My First School Book are available, but My First Lowercase Book is only available in a 2-book consumable student set. A Hands-On Learning Pack provides essential manipulatives for one student: the 2 consumable student books, a slate chalkboard with two little sponge cubes, 4 little chalk bits, 1 mat for wood pieces (13 total), and 2 pencils for little hands. In the My First School Book, students begin with crayons (the double-sided FLIP Crayons are suggested) to help them learn to hold, place, and move the writing tool.

The indispensable Teacher’s Guide will help you guide your child step-by-step from prewriting skills (such as following patterns, making strokes, or drawing inside shapes) to beginning handwriting instruction. Beginning with foundational skills, including shapes and colors, it then progresses to writing capital letters. The year ends with six weeks of lowercase using the My First Lowercase Book (not available separately).
