Algebra 1: Principles in Secondary Mathematics challenges students to continue building in-depth knowledge in preparation for a more advanced study of math. Core algebraic topics and objectives are presented and addressed as students become fluent in the mathematical language, problem styles, and problem-solving and reasoning skills.
Each lesson presents a careful, intentional progression that allows students to activate and review concepts already mastered, have ample opportunities for practice, achieve and show mastery, and deepen their problem-solving abilities.
In this course students will learn about:
Solving Equations and inequalities; Writing and graphing linear equations; Solving systems of equations and inequalities; Factoring Polynomials; and Graphing nonlinear equations.
Revised with a new lesson format and structure, this course is designed for independent learning. Students watch online video lessons, complete practice problems, perform mastery checks and targeted reviews, and use virtual manipulatives as directed. Covering core algebraic topics, lessons are presented with intentional progression to enable mastery and deepen problem-solving skills. Principles of Secondary Math meets the skills and concepts required for standards alignment. Physical manipulatives are optional, lessons reference digital manipulatives or drawing models.
The required components include the Student Worktexts A and B, the Formula Sheet/Mastery Rubric, the Test Books, and the Digital Pack.
Student Worktext A includes an introduction to the course, including a quick start guide and directions on how to complete the lessons. It is divided into three units, each beginning with objectives and record keeping. A total of 18 lessons are included in Book A. Student Worktext B begins reviewing the course structure and quick start guide before launching into units five and six. There are a total of 30 lessons in the course. Lessons are divided into two parts, each beginning with the objectives and a short “why” explanation. Students then complete the warmup (review) that is a previously taught concept that is important to the new concept being taught. As students continue to work through the lessons, video icons direct students to watch the digital video lessons. Each part concludes with practice and mastery check worksheets, with a targeted lesson review at the end the lesson. Black and white worktext pages are perforated for easy removal. Not reproducible.
The 8 ½” x 11” Formula Sheet/Mastery Check Rubric is a two-sided glossy cardstock resource that support students through the lessons. The Formula Sheet side includes algebraic properties, properties of equality, exponent rules, exponential functions, linear equations, figures and formulas, quadratic functions, other formulas, and common conversions. The Mastery Check Rubric side includes a check list to know if students are exceeding, progressing, or needs practice with lesson objectives. It also includes a skill and criteria check list. Available only in the Sets–not available separately.
The Tests Book includes lesson and unit tests and the midterm and final exam for the student, with all the answer keys for the tests and exams in the back. Fully worked solutions are found in Digital Resources. Lesson tests contain 10-15 problems and should be taken after successful completion of Lesson Parts A and B. Unit tests include 25 multiple choice problems. A midterm exam is taken after Unit 3 and consists of 35 multiple choice problems. The final exam focuses primarily on units 4 and 5. It also consists of 356 multiple choice problems. Not reproducible.
The Digital Pack includes lifetime access to the Digital version of the Instructor Handbooks, Lesson videos, Solutions, Virtual Manipulatives, and Extension Lessons. The Digital Pack is only available in the Universal Set or Universal Set Plus. Purchase requires a valid email address. Please allow 1-2 business days to receive digital access.
Optional resources include the printed Instructor Handbooks (A and B). This is a helpful resource for parents who prefer to follow along the lessons with their student and includes the answers filled in. This is the same content that is found in the digital Instructor Handbooks. Also optional are the physical manipulatives: Integer Blocks and the Algebra/Decimal Inserts. Students who learn best using tactile resources will appreciate the physical manipulatives in lieu of the included virtual manipulatives.
The Universal Set includes all required components: Student Worktexts A and B, Digital Pack with Virtual manipulatives, Digital Teacher Guides A and B, Video lessons, etc., Formula Sheet/Mastery Rubric and the Tests Book. The Universal Set Plus includes everything in the Universal Set, plus the Printed Teacher Guides. Printed Teacher Guides are also available separately, without Digital Access. Available for additional students. the Student Package includes Student Worktexts A and B, Tests Book, and the Formula Sheet/Mastery Check Rubric. No digital access is included. ~Deanne
