Introducing the tools of scientists, this unit focuses on how to use microscopes for science discovery. Beginning with how the microscope works, students learn about the parts of a microscope, prepared and unprepared slides, how to look at a slide, and how to draw what they observe. This unit provides an excellent foundation for upper-level science courses that have the tendency to move quickly through basic microscope skills. Recommended resources include an elementary microscope with a built-in light, three objective lenses, a single adjustment knob (fine adjustment is not necessary) and a stage stop. Also recommended is a magnifying glass, talcum powder, table salt, sugar, tiny bug or bug parts (or prepared slide), pond water, six blank slides and slide covers, and the following prepared slides: gnat or tiny bug with wings, a feather and onion skin.
Take a Closer Look - Introduction to Microscopes for Young Scientists
Description
This book gives young scientists all they need to know to begin using microscopes, discovering the unseen world all around them. Along with simple but informative explanations of how to use a microscope and how to prepare slides, this book is packed with activities that get students observing the microscopic world.
With the accompanying learning guide, a student is guided in using an elementary-level microscope to look at things such as a talcum powder, table salt, sugar, parts of insects and pond water.
The Young Scientist series is hands-on, self-pacing, and meets the learning needs of diverse learners. The courses are well-written and focus on mastery. Students should expect to complete each course in 10-17 hours, with an end of unit exam.
Written to the student, Textbooks are abundantly illustrated and engaging. The Student Learning Guide supports independent learning with basic instructions and chapter reading or activity steps to complete. Activities vary and include drawing or labeling in a science journal, finding related items, teacher discussion, and hands-on activities or experiments. The Teacher Resource Packet includes the program philosophy, background information with materials list, end of unit exam, exam answers, and Certificate of Achievement. Home Study Kits include the softcover Student Text, Learning Guide, Science Journal, and Teacher Resource Packet.
