Category Description for Introduction to Public Speaking

This 12-week course provides students the key skills in writing and presenting speeches from the ancient Greeks’ Five Canons of Rhetoric (invention; arrangement; elocution; memory; and delivery). The course design balances well between students creating and evaluating their own speeches and evaluating fellow students’ speeches in areas of poise, locution, contact, and content. While familiarity with the IEW writing method is helpful, students will start their speech writing with beginning skills: Key Word Outlines (KWO). Then, students will present varied selections of poetry, speeches, and more (including some references to ancient gods). After practicing with these, students will create their own content while practicing and learning to evaluate the 5 speech styles, including narrative, expository, and persuasive speeches, varying from 5-10 minutes in length. The course ends with a presentation of a 5-minute impromptu speech.
