Difficult to learn, but an amazing foundation
I taught my firstborn to read using The Reading Lesson. He took off on his own then, and is reading way ahead of his grade level. I never really taught him spelling, but he is an excellent speller because he is a visual person. I am the same way. I read a lot, therefore I can spell because I remember how the word is supposed to look.

Teaching my second born has been hard. I went through the same book, but she was not a confident reader upon completion. She was a terrible speller. I could not figure out why she wasn't able to spell the most basic words. A few months into homeschooling 3rd grade, I realized we had to do something drastically different.

I have spent a lot of money on this program. I decided that if I was going to do it, I wanted to do it all the way, so I bought lots of the extras. In the beginning, it was difficult. I felt like I was learning a new language. This program is not user friendly or easy to implement. It requires lots of hands on time from the teacher. But it is worth it. I have learned so much that I didn't know about the English language, and we are only on list D. There's still a lot of learning I have to do, but I actually look forward to our SWR time every day. And my daughter has improved in leaps and bounds over the last few weeks. I see the rules and fingergrams clicking in her brain. And she recalls rules that I don't even remember teaching her.

It seems contrary, but this program is complicated and simple at the same time. A huge learning curve to get started, but it feels like a very basic late-1800s-one-room-schoolhouse style of learning. If you have the time to invest in it, I would highly recommend it.

Worth the effort
I will echo everything that the previous testifier, Heather, wrote. This program is very challenging to learn to teach. I feel like the manual explains the "why" but the "how-to" is very much lacking. As I read through, I took lots and lots of notes - even writing out a script for myself for my first day of teaching it so I would remember everything I was supposed to say and touch on. Needless to say, this program and pushed me out of my comfort zone.

I tried a few different things with my son but everything was very painful. I even took him to a summer reading program at a local university last summer and the only thing that did was reassure me that by continuing to look for something that would work for him was the right thing to do. Another homeschooling mom told me about SWR and she warned me that it's hard to learn to teach but once you do, it'll be very rewarding. I will say that watching online SWR video tutorials along with reading the manual really helped solidify things for me.

My son now knows more about phonograms and spelling rules than I have ever knew in my 35 years. I've always been a terrible speller but I feel like this program will not only help him learn to read and spell well, but he will also know WHY things are spelled the way that they're spelled.

I was concerned about the cursive and thought that maybe I would stick to manuscript since that is what we were originally doing but he is learning to write cursive beautifully - and it really is easier for him than the manuscript was!

The rewards of this program far outweigh the confusion and hard work that you have to put in as the teacher in the beginning. Just prepare to spend some significant time learning how to teach it, watch some SWR videos, get your materials all prepared, and then jump all in - it really is worth it!

I am really hoping this does the trick since my kiddo is 3-4 grade levels behind in spelling. I like that it has CDs even though I am not fond of the "christian" but non-biblical quotations and sentences that the word is used in. Ugh how am I going to undo all that damage? But I digress ... I like how the spelling rule is paired with a word list and I hope this does the trick otherwise logic of english (which seems too juvenile at this point).

After a lot of research, I decided to go with SWR. It is cost effective and the program that most makes sense to me. I've learned a lot about English that I never knew and was puzzled about. I'm learning right along with my children. A lot of the mysteries of English have been solved for me through this program.

After much research I chose this curriculum because it allows me to teach all my children of various ages all their language skills with minimal time and materials.

My kids are having a lot of trouble with spelling and a friend recommended this program. I did a lot of research, and this looked like the best program for us because it teaches concrete rules.

I am deciding between this curriculum and The Writing Road to Reading. My question is: Does this kit come with lesson plans? Thank you!
User on Mar 6, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Not exactly, it has The Spelling Guide Book, which has lists, that tell you what phonograms and rules to review or introduce for that list, but not exactly "lesson plans." There is also a placement test that you can give so you know where to start your student. This program can be a little confusing at first, but after putting a little time into looking over it, skimming and reading parts, I was able to do and and not feel overwhelmed. I have 3rd, 1st, and K5, kids and I have loved having this program this year! Its worth any time needed to figure it out and do it!

W.I.S.E. Guide for Spelling
BEST ANSWER: I'm not sure if I understand the question completely but I will try to answer. The WISE Guide for Spelling is the book the teacher uses everyday as they work through the spelling lists. You need the SWR core book (I assume this is what you are referring to as Essential Teacher Planner.) It gives the steps and is full of information and rich resources. It took me awhile to understand but the DVDs really helped tremendously. We are more than happy with SWR. It is a well thought out program and Im learning along with my daughter.
