Product Description
This book was written to be a natural follow up to the much-appreciated For the Children's Sake by Susan Schaeffer Macaulay. While that book has inspired (and continues to inspire) many parents and educators, it has also left them with a desire for an even deeper understanding of the Charlotte Mason philosophy and her teaching methods. This book was written in response to their requests for further help and guidance in implementing these techniques. The book was written by a handful of contributors, including Macaulay, all of whom are deeply involved in education and are Charlotte Mason advocates. The book holds six chapters. The first two cover "The Value of Charlotte Mason's Work for Today," and "The Child is a Person." The third chapter discusses the "Four Pillars of Education" - atmosphere, discipline, life, and the science of relations. In the "Distinctives of a Charlotte Mason Education" chapter, a wide variety of topics are addressed, including living books, narration, poetry, history, mathematics, nature study, music appreciation, foreign languages, physical education, and many more. The last two chapters are entitled "Broader Application of Charlotte Mason's Teaching Principles," and "An Applied Philosophy." This is a highly-informative book which takes the topic of education quite seriously. 254 pgs, pb. - Melissa
Category Description for Charlotte Mason Approach
Describes a philosophy of education based on the Charlotte Mason approach - an approach concerned as much with instilling good character and high morals in children than with learning basic skills. After acquiring basic abilities in the three R's, children learn through "living books" (as opposed to dry texts) and life experiences. Macaulay draws heavily on the philosophies of Charlotte Mason, but from a Christian viewoint. Besides imparting Mason's philosophy and sharing her personal experiences as a homeschooled child, Susan shares the joy, freedom, and beauty possible in life and learning. This title is also available in unabridged audiobook, read by Mary Woods. Runs 5 hours.

5.0 / 5.01 Review5 Stars4 Stars3 Stars2 Stars1 Stars10000What a beautiful book and easy to read When I initially read it I felt sad for myself that I had not had this sort of education and excited that maybe my children could receive it This book outlines in simple form a way of implementing a Charlotte Mason education without over-complicating your schedule (which I tend to do) It gives good ideas on how to structure your curriculum for various levels lays out what needs to be taught at various levels per subject without dictating what books to use which is great for me in New Zealand as I would not want to put the same focus on certain aspects of history etc as others from another country would I have been implementing a Charlotte Mason type education for the last four years but this book has certainly given me food for thought on how to simplify it so that MY CHILDREN WILL LOVE TO LEARN If you have read Susan Schaeffer Macauley's "For the Children's Sake" that would be the "why" and this book would be the 'how" I've shared this book with various friends who also feel cheated personally and wish we could go back to school this way but we are excited and liberated for our children Thank you for offering such a great book- Was this review helpful?
