Description

Elizabeth Ann lives a sheltered life under the care of her over-protective Aunt Frances. She is well cared for, but she has become fearful of everything, self-absorbed, and a hypochondriac (all by the age of 9!). Her sweet aunt, of course, meant her no harm. She was the first to offer to take care of her when her parents passed away, if only to save the dear child from living with the dreadful Putney cousins in Vermont. Since Elizabeth and her aunt were so close (in fact she felt as if she was the only one who understood her), it was only a matter of time before her opinion of the Putney's rubbed off on Elizabeth. Elizabeth's life is turned upside down when her aunt is no longer able to care for her. Next thing she knows, she is on a train to the dreaded Putney farm! Here begins "Betsy's" adventures in New England, where life with her country cousins isn't nearly as bad as she imagined. In fact, her new-found independence and strength are invigorating. When Aunt Frances writes to tell her she is coming to take her back, Betsy is faced with a difficult choice. 178 pgs, pb.
