History Pockets - Ancient Civilizations
Category Description for History Pockets
Supplement your elementary studies of history with memorable activities and a personalized book of projects and the facts they've learned. Each book is divided up into a series of units, each unit representing one pocket in their book. Each unit contains several parts, including an overview page for you, and then a title for the pocket, a "Fast Facts" bookmark or picture dictionary cards, an "About" page or small booklet to read and discuss on the topic, an "Art Reference Page" (for the upper levels), and various activities to complete and include in your pocket. For example, in the Native Americans book, in the Tlingit unit, there's a title for the pocket along with several picture dictionary cards, a fact sheet, a booklet with illustrations for the child to color, and then two craft projects - creating a potlatch mask that the Tlingits wear to special occasions, as well as a totem pole layer book. A selection of pocket contents from an upper grade book such Ancient Egypt in the "Daily Life" unit would include a pocket title, 'Fast Facts" bookmark with facts about life in ancient Egypt, an "About Daily Life" sheet to read, an art page featuring ancient Egyptian clothing, and activities including dressing a figure in ancient Egyptian clothing, making a necklace of six important Egyptian symbols, and making a small book on ancient Egyptian dwellings. Most projects, patterns, and everything else to be included in the pockets are reproducible for your own use. All the pieces you need in this book are included for your use, and there are very few (if any) time-consuming projects, as most of them require only a paper pattern copied from the book and used, making this an easy way to combine some hands-on extra fun and personality into your history study, without expending a lot of time and effort on projects, for moms running a little short on time.
Customer Reviews5.0 / 5.03 ReviewsWe used the "Moving West" History Pockets this year for my 8 & 10 year olds It was by far their favorite subject they would ask for it everyday Very easy to use and interesting I read additional info from other books while they worked on their projects Great for all learning styles I will definitely use them again next yearMay 4, 2007We love History Pockets! Last year we used Ancient Civilizations in our co-op class This year we've done Native Americans and have begun working on Life in Plymouth Colony My 8-year old daughter BEGS to do history all the time The material is presented in an easy-to-use manner making it easy to teach multiple grades when needed We also found it easy to expand the units by picking up books and videos from the library Other than the photocopying (and optional library trips) there's not much preparation time needed As far as curriculum goes this is inexpensive and worth much more than it actually costs! My daughter loves the hands-on projects maps and such and the vocabulary/dictionary projects for each book are really useful in helping the kids remember the key points and new words they've learned in that unit I would recommend this series to anyone! (Also check out their ScienceWorks series -- similar to the History Pockets but covering science topics -- they're great too!)June 4, 2007I cannot say enough about History Pockets! This was such a fun way to study the history of ancient civilizations for my 8 year old son Included in our book were the subjects: What is History Ancient Mesopotamia Egypt Greece Rome China and the Aztec World Each subject is divided into a "pocket" (basically a folder) which is made from a piece of folded construction paper In each pocket you place the completed works of your studies Each subject contains a teacher's overview which describes the activities presented in each pocket Also included is a Teacher Fact Sheet with background information which can be used as a reference for activities in each pocket Each pocket contains a label children can color and 'Words to Know' which includes some basic vocabulary relevent to each particular civilization Pockets also include a student booklet which gives basic information about each civilization and explains the vocabulary in the 'Words to Know' section Each civilization pocket includes activities such as coloring a picture of people in their native dress (which you can laminate and use as a puppet) making a post card from the ancient civilization (where children can relate what they've learned) and additional activites such as Life along the Nile (Egypt) Make a Parthenon Shape Book (Greece) Dancing Dragon for the Chinese New Year and making the Aztec Calendar The book ends with students making a 'Passport to the Ancient Civilizations' where they can make a picture and describe what they liked most about each history pocket Simple elegant and easy to use that is why I LOVE History Pockets Just about everything you need is included in this booklet and all you need to do is make enough photocopies for everyone! The Ancient Civilizations History Pockets is for grades 1-3 and I believe it would easily work well for all grades My preschooler has especially enjoyed coloring the people and using them as puppets The only items we really had to provide were construction paper glue and crayons The best thing about History Pockets is that it is simple information for lower grades but in actuality it more than served its purpose by picquing the interest of my 8 year old to further investigate these civilizations with books and videos from our local library It's art history social studies reading writing vocabulary and math (because you can learn to count to 10 in Chinese)! We cannot wait to start our Native American History Pockets!November 22, 2006
