A friend gifted me with this book four years ago when I began my homeschooling journey Since then I've loaned it so many times to new homeschooling mothers that its pages are worn and tattered Today I'm purchasing another copy to replace my old oneI simply cannot say enough wonderful things about this book It was a welcome encouragement to me as a new home educating mother and at a time when I was just beginning to dip into the Charlotte Mason method The author paints a lovely picture of the home keeping/home teaching mother I find it a useful tool when I encounter new homeschooling mothers too who are experiencing a little homeschool burnout This bookis nourishment for the soul and just what they need I read it every new learning year along with Lessons at blackberry inn to give me the fire I need to keep learning at home fun and full of joy

Okay I admit it Ive wanted this book for the past few years just because the title intrigued me When it arrived I read the whole thing through immediately This book was written as if it were a diary from a woman Carol who lived in the 1930s She is learning how to homeschool her children and juggle life at the same time Since the book was written as a diary there is a storyline to follow as well What a surprise! Now that I know how the story ends I plan to start over and read about a chapter per week during the school year to keep up on some fresh ideas about nature studies The book starts in autumn and goes through all four seasons There are 58 short chapters and almost every single one ends with a question or a thought to get those mental juices flowing One book that 'Carol' uses a lot is Handbook of Nature Study I just happened to buy that book at the same time that I bought "Pocketful of Pinecones" I am glad that I did The handbook seemed a bit overwhelming to me when I pulled it out of the box and so I put it aside But as I read about 'Carol' using it I started to look up some of the subjects that she looked up just to familiarize myself with the large handbook Now I wish that I had bought both books sooner!

This book is a gem! I have read it several times and it always leaves me inspired and with a smile on my face Karen's "gentle art of learning" is on display in this book as it takes you through a year with a family applying these methods in their homeschool A practical look at using nature study in our everyday lives This is one of my favorite all time books and I can't recommend it enough!

Such a great introduction to Charlotte Mason methods and nature study--I want to go outside WITHOUT the kids sometimes to look for what is illustrated so beautifully in words.
