If you enjoy debating differing viewpoints at your house, you’ll love this book. Designed as a prompt for weekly compositions, the book lists 36 quotes from famous authors. Each of the 36 assignments is on a two-page spread. A quote is shown in large letters on the left-hand page; on the right is brief biographical information about the author and a brief discussion of the literary work from which the quote is taken. Also listed are four or five other quotes about the same topic which may agree or disagree with the main quote. Several questions are given which act as starting points for an essay. You may want to write your own discussion questions as well. A wide variety of viewpoints are presented. Quotes from American writers include William Bradford, Benjamin Franklin, Jonathan Edwards, Walt Whitman, Carl Sandburg, Jack London, and Robert Frost. The supporting or opposing quotes in each lesson are even more wide-ranging in viewpoint, from the Bible and St. Augustine to Stokley Carmichael and Friedrich Nietzsche, and even literary greats Tim Allen and Michael Jordan. Let me say that I strongly disagree with some of the quotes given in the books. The value of these books, is to strengthen a student’s ability to defend his worldview from differing ideas.
