Life Science Quest for Middle Grades
This inexpensive resource book offers a wealth of terrific life science labs that easily correlate with any life science text, and introduces middle schoolers to lab equipment. It is organized into eight chapters, covering cells, DNA, heredity, simple organisms, the plant kingdom, the animal kingdom, ecosystems, and ecosystem cycles and biomes. Each chapter includes information, a related science lab activity, and a review worksheet. The information is succinctly presented, often with diagrams, charts, and bulleted lists. The lab activities are excellent, and you might be familiar with some of the old life science standbys. In the chapter on cells, three pages are devoted to explaining discoveries related to cells, the parts of a microscope, the main parts of a cell, and the differences between plant and animal cells. Several labs follow, including one where you make microscope slides with onion tissue and cells from a cheek swab and compare the cells, make a cell model using gelatin and a variety of other items, and demonstrate the process of osmosis doing a lab with a bag of scented gelatin in a bath of warm water and iodine. Now, not all chapters are that involved many of them are much shorter, with fewer activities. Teacher resource pages are found at the end of both units in the book, and these include enrichment activities and an answer key. While you will need iodine, slides and cover slips, a microscope, and a magnifying glass for the labs, all other equipment seems to be readily available household items. 94 pages, reproducible. Jess
Written specifically for the Christian homeschool family, this up and coming science curriculum was developed by a physician and homeschooling dad. Textbooks are full color, easy to understand and user friendly. At all levels, students can work independently, and parents do not need a science background. In the elementary years, videos provide the teaching with workbooks to reinforce the lessons. Optional Course and/or Lab DVD available for Biology.
Maintaining the rigor and clarity we have come to expect from Science Shepherd, the 2nd edition features beautiful new graphics and updated technical terms to align with current standards. Written for self-directed learning, students learn the characteristics and chemistry of life, cells, DNA, heredity, evolution and creation, scientific classification, human anatomy and physiology, nutrition, and earth science (ecology). Components include the hardcover, colorfully-illustrated Textbook, Answer Key/Parent Companion with a 36-week schedule, answers to study questions/tests, and chapter summaries. A test booklet is also available. Suggested scheduled lab activities are found in Life Science Quest for Middle Grades and use household items.
Taught by Dr. Scott Hardin, the Life Science DVDs provide 110 video lessons for 20+ hours of teaching support. Following the 36-week schedule found in the answer key and parent companion, the video lessons provide comprehensive teaching from the 2nd Edition Life Science textbook to help your student better understand God's creation. Also included are the online chapter review quizzes to help promote subject mastery. Quizzes are automatically scored and can be repeated as much as necessary to ensure mastery. Students (and parents!) will appreciate this additional support that equips student's for independent learning.
