Category Description for Bju Press Science

With so many secular materials infused with evolution, it's sometimes difficult to find solid science materials that are based on Creationism. Bob Jones Science is thoroughly Christian, including many evidences and support of Creationism and many "holes" in the theory of evolution, particularly at the upper grade levels. Vital to the program are the student activities, or labs. The scientific method is emphasized as children participate on hands-on activities and experiments throughout the curriculum. The junior high and high school levels are full-blown laboratory science courses, complete with a separate lab manual. Experiments are excellent, but some of them require unique materials or are difficult to do in a home environment. The revised texts are more home-friendly, though, and Bob Jones also offers a Lab Manual Supplement for home schoolers, containing tips for doing lab activities in smaller groups. We have used many of these upper level texts in our home school. We also have accumulated a wealth of laboratory equipment and supplies over the years, which has made the lab work easier. I have sometimes substituted labs from Experiences in Biology and Experiences in Chemistry (from Castle Heights - see index) where it's been too difficult to use a particular lab. Bob Jones has made it easy to obtain lab materials and chemicals (you can order almost anything you need for their courses on the Science Lab Materials Order Form), but some labs are still pretty complex for a home environment, requiring a lot of set-up and preparation time. For each grade level, essential materials are listed first, followed by asterisked (*) supplemental support materials. Support items used at multiple grade levels are at the end.

Category Description for Bju Press Secondary Levels

There is more evaluation of science and its relationship to Scripture at the upper levels, and biblical Creationism is presented as truth. Teacher's editions contain reduced student text pages on the same page with teacher instructions, notes, and answers.

Category Description for Bju Press Biology

A comprehensive high-school biology laboratory course including cellular biology, genetics, biotechnology, the history of life, microbiology, botany, zoology, ecology, human anatomy and physiology, and the systems of the human body. The course takes a tacitly Christian position on current issues like AIDS, abortion, sexuality, drugs, euthanasia, hypnotism, homosexuality, ecology, physical disorders, genetic engineering, etc. Laboratory exercises are included in the Student Lab Manual (sold separately). The Dissection Labs DVD is a real help, often providing a better view of the target system than a real dissection provides. If you decide to do the actual dissections, you will need a kit that contains specimens (earthworm, crayfish, perch and frog), dissection tray, and tools. Bob Jones sells one that includes the Dissection Activity Book, or check out our item #8779 which includes specimens, tray and tools, but no book or magnifier. The Dissection Kit Student Activity and Teacher's Activity books sold separately provide detailed descriptions of the four specimens, as well as instructions and diagrams on the best way to dissect each creature and questions to answer along the way. The teacher's book contains the answers. A microscope and other equipment may also be necessary.

Category Description for Biology (6th Ed.)

This course studies biology through four biblical worldview themes: Foundations, Ethics, Design, and Modeling. Units include Living in God’s World; The Pattern of Life; Microorganisms and Plants; Animals; and Human Body. Students learn the processes of homeostasis to biological structures at a molecular, cellular, organism, and population level. They will analyze the interactions of biotic and abiotic factors within different biomes and compare and contrast design, organization, anatomical structures, and related functions in living organisms. Current and historical biological models are also evaluated. Mini labs and more detailed labs offer hands-on opportunities. Throughout the lessons, a biblical framework of ethics is applied to issues related to biology. The updated edition includes new images, additional mini labs and ethics boxes, new teaching strategies, and expanded content in chapter ten. Because of these changes, this edition is not compatible with the previous one. The homeschool kit includes the Teacher’s Manual Part 1 and 2, Student Edition, Lab Manual, Teacher Lab Manual, Assessments, and Assessments Key. A lab kit is available (040242) for this new edition.

The Teacher Editions Part 1 and 2 give a lesson plan overview and detailed lesson plans using a four-step teaching cycle by engaging (capturing student’s attention), instructing (direct and indirect instruction), applying (lab activities), and assessing (quizzes and tests). Teaching notes are wrapped around reduced copies of the student pages. There are 175 lessons including lab and test days. Differentiated instruction is included for students with different learning styles. Formative assessments help the parent or teacher know if students are mastering the concepts. The Appendices include extra resources and grading rubrics. HomeschoolHub.com offers free digital resources to homeschoolers. Some of these resources include an equipment & materials list, instructional aids & answer key, lesson plan overview, mini lab equipment & materials list, and web links.

Each chapter of the Student Edition begins with a short article highlighting developments in biology that need to be looked at from a biblical worldview. The text is appealing with lots of colorful illustrations and vocabulary words bolded. The essential question in each section is highlighted in green. Smaller key questions along the sidebars help students answer the essential question. Mini labs are presented in the student textbook. Each section and chapter include a review. “Ethics Features” are articles that students read to apply a biblical perspective to ethical issues related to biology.

The Lab Manual contains a variety of activities for the parent/teacher to choose from. The equipment needed is listed at the beginning of each lab. Lab questions are mixed in with the procedure steps as students learn to think like a scientist. Some labs include STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) activities. The Teacher Lab Manual guides students through the labs and provides answers to the questions.

Assessments include 25 chapter tests and a quiz for each section of the chapters. Assessments Answer Key includes a copy of the assessments with answers in red. ~ Gina
