MCP Plaid Phonics 2003 Level B
A very solid series of phonetic and word study skills, from letter recognition in the K level, to alphabetizing, syllabication, and dictionary skills in the upper levels. Built-in review of previously learned skills within books helps students master concepts. They now also contain some pages in “standardized test format,” so you get a little test preparation as a bonus. There is considerable overlap between levels, allowing you to “jump in” anywhere in the program. Levels K, A, B, and C are in motivating full-color. Levels D-F are available only in two-color editions. We are offering the ‘;98 edition, which features photos; the ‘;95 edition, which features black and white illustrations; and the 2003 edition, which is updated but highly similar to the 1998 edition. In fact, a lot of the pages are exactly the same, and about the only real difference I could find at a glance was that the tear-out book pages include only four pages, so you simply fold them in half instead of folding and cutting for eight pages.

Great Book. Easy to use without teacher's manual, just open the workbook and go (177 pages). Rules are easy to understand with clear examples and practice. Lessons are varied to maintain interest (fill-ins, matching, circling, fill-in bubbles, crosswords, etc). The only drawback is if you have a young child who is an advanced reader. My child is in 1st grade & is advanced in reading/phonics but working age appropriately in regards to motor skill. Therefore, I modify some of directions for the exercises that require more writing.

I absolutely adore this program. My son is in the third grade and I wish I had started earlier with this program. It is so complete from the student books to the teacher's manual. Everything is fully explained, it is easy to teach and more importantly kids love it. There is enough practice to make sure they get the concept, but it is never dull and repetitive. I also like that the program will take nearly the entire year to finish.

I have taught different phonics programs in both public and private schools, but when I found MCP Plaid Phonics 2 years ago when I started homeschooling, I fell in love! The full-color pictures are high interest to children, and I appreciate the variety of exercises offered in each book; circling, X'ing, lots of handwriting practice, practice writing sentences and stories, coloring, drawing lines, and cutting. My students have learned quickly and retained beautifully the phonics learned in this series. This program is definitely worth the price for the student books, but the teacher manuals are a bit pricey and truly not necessary for Levels A-C. The manual for kindergarten, though, has some great ideas for extending the lessons. This program is so easy to use and so effective, I would never use another phonics series again!
